Wow, you seriously chose a side profile shot of Matt Heinz wearing a mask when there are plenty of available public photos, including this one from his Facebook page? Some voters might think you’re rooting for the other guy.

and it's horrible to see all these cars just next to the sea and the people behind :))

Pretty sure this is Mount Stuart, shot it out the 737 window on a late-November flight to Chicago, 2010. Another shot of it by land in comments. #MountainMonday

Lewis Clephane, founder of the Republican Party: "In those days it was a crime to be called a Republican, and every man who was then known as a Republican was denounced as an Abolitionist. We have fought the battle." Its first platform: 1/

Clephane recounts fears of insurrectionists almost prevented Lincoln's inaugural parade; the party prevailed. He also notes how an insurrectionist mob attacked the Republican "Wide Awakes." Yes, woke. Ironies aplenty. 2/

I came to this researching his younger brother, James, for my book on the Linotype. Here is a fascinating biographic sketch of Lewis Clephane by his son: 3/

Lewis Clephane in Washington: "The Republicans of this city, surrounded as they were by dangers on every hand, threatened, vilified, abused, and ostracised by their fellow-citizens, stood firm, fearless, and true to their principles." 4/
in reply to Jeff Jarvis

I tag Joe Scarborough & Nicolle Wallace here because they often speak about the dissolution of their former party. It is worthwhile to contrast the GOP of today not just to the GOP of Reagan & Eisenhower, but also to the party's roots in the principles of Abolition. 5/

I think once Trump kicks it the power struggle within the Republican party will be damned fun to watch. I wonder what percentage of the party is still never trump or agnostic.
in reply to Jeff Jarvis

Note media's role in the birth of the Republican Party. The abolitionist newspaper National Era (Clephane was its business manager) lent its pages to the cause. Clephane then founded a paper: The National Republican. American news media, too, once stood on such principles. 6/
in reply to Jeff Jarvis

One more note here: The role Lewis Clephane & the National Era took in the publication of Uncle Tom's Cabin. (BTW, I came to all this because I'm researching his brother James' role in the invention of the Linotype. I love these research rabbit holes.) 7/
in reply to Jeff Jarvis

I suspect "Uncle Tom's Cabin" is a book many know about but few have actually read. It's fascinating. The characters are rather wooden, but it's full of fascinating details about slavery that I never knew -- like the fact that southern ladies who were too genteel to whip their slaves could outsource the job to "whipping houses."
in reply to Jeff Jarvis

My father was a Linotypist. He learned that trade using GI Bill benefits at the end of World War II. He was a sailor in that war. I was a soldier in the Vietnam War.

Well, I got more reading to catch up on. Thanks for sharing this

Note well that the US Attorney for the Southern District of Florida, who will prosecute the alleged attempted assassin of Donald Trump, is Markenzy Lapointe, a Marine Gulf War veteran and immigrant who was born in ... Port-au-Prince, Haiti.

I thought the same exact thing this has to just make him cringe, but he’s a professional and he’s doing his job
