Denying dark days with toxic positivity is nonsense. Knowing you survived them is a welcomed pivot.

(I don't know who created this. It's in a PDF I have of unknown origin called "focus slides." If you know, please tell me and I'll update my post with a credit.)

I finally got around to implementing the MacPaint file format, so now you can not only convert all your old MacPaint files to PNG, but also the reverse.

If you rescue any old MacPaint files please send them to me for archiving on macpaint.org!

“I’ve written at length about the absurdity of attempting to individualize what is a collective problem.

What was once a libertarian, far-right wing idea - disease control should be the territory of individuals, not society at large- was first promoted by Republicans, then mainstreamed by liberals in order to paint Biden’s failed vaccine-only herd-immunity strategy as a success.” thegauntlet.news/p/people-cant…

PRESS RELEASE: seti.org/will-comet-c2023-a3-t…

Discovered in early 2023 by observatories in South Africa and China, Comet C/2023 A3 (Tsuchinshan-Atlas) originates from the distant Oort Cloud. Models developed by Ariel Graykowski, a researcher at the SETI Institute and head of the cometary activity program for Unistellar, suggest that the comet could become as bright as the North Star this fall, offering a spectacular sight to the naked eye.

To say that Tesla's board has shown the moral fortitude of a damp, three-day-old cheeseburger might be an insult to stale fast food. At least a moldy burger has the decency to show visible signs of its deterioration.

In addition to everything else, this ad repeats the hilariously stupid criticism of Walz for getting married on the anniversary of Tiananmen Square. Trump has literally said he admires China for massacring the democracy protesters.

Why? Mozilla exits the fediverse and will shutter its Mastodon server in December 🤔

shame, but at the same time this shows the power of mastodon / open source. You can just download your data and move over to a different server. Try doing that with the former blue bird or the F-site.

If they shut down their Mastodon but still exist on X, then it's obvious to anyone not totally blind where their influence is coming from - and as consequence, where they are headed.

I wonder why that Twitter screenshot was deemed a violation by Tumblr.

(I know what was there from an older screenshot on one of the other four websites full of screenshots of each other)

"Our French [Horizon national contact point] was told - as an unofficial answer - that because lots of [EU technology research] budget are allocated to AI, there is not much left for Internet infrastructure."

This is where the trained #MOLE craze stops being an amusing waste of time, and starts becoming a threat to the re-democratisation of the internet.

Another argument for why most "Open Source AI" is actually proprietary;

"A system that can only be built on proprietary data can only be proprietary. It doesn’t get simpler than this self-evident axiom."

This is also why a #MOLE training system that fully respects our software freedoms - so we can protect our other freedoms - is probably not possible.

"If all goes well, Stefano Maffulli, the OSI's executive director, expects to announce the OSI open source AI definition at All Things Open in late October. But some open source leaders already want nothing to do with it.

...

That's all well and good, but Maffulli doesn't feel a purely idealistic approach to the open source AI definition will work because no one will be able to meet the definition."

Exactly. It's W3C and DRM again.
