Open Search Symposium is open! Deadline is March 1, 2026.
This years theme is Boosting Digital Sovereignty.
The conference will be held in Berlin in October, free of charge and is organized by the Open Search Foundation.
There is also a Call for Demos to young researchers and students to showcase their innovative work using the Open Web Index of the OpenWebSearch.eu project.

Are you considering to apply to an Open Internet Stack open call from the @EUCommission ? You are welcome to join one of the matchmaking sessions on February 11.
The aim of the sessions is to facilitate people who are looking for consortium partners to apply for a grant together. There will be 3 sessions, organized per open call.
@EC_NGI will give a brief introduction, and then the floor is open.

📢 Matchmaking events for building consortium for Open Internet Stack and Web 4.0 topics of work-programme 2026. After a short introduction from the EC, the floor will be opened on a first come first serve basis. This has been done thanks to the work of @meejah on `txtorcon` and of course of @torproject and the support of @nlnet and @NGIZero .

In last year’s SFSCON, the FSFE shared perspectives of the trends in Free Software legal and licensing that we’ve observed over the years while working with Free Software projects that were supported by the EU’s Next Generation Internet (NGI) initiatives.
Since then, much has happened that has affected how all parties working within these NGI initiatives view software and tech development in relation to rapidly changing international norms.
This talk will speak about shifts in perspectives among Free Software developers within the NGI framework that the FSFE has observed in the past year, and the impacts these shifts have on the Free Software ecosystem.
Discussions about digital sovereignty, cybersecurity, interoperability, strategic procurement and budgets show that we need a dedicated, secured long-term funding programme for Free Software in Europe.
The EU has supported the Free Software ecosystem through funding schemes like NGI and several pilot projects in the last years. However, these funds can be easily removed, as we have seen in the NGI budget cut for Free Software in summer 2024. It is also piecework rather than a well thought-out long-term strategy to achieve clear goal. This exposes a larger issue: that software freedom in the EU needs more stable, secure long-term financial support.
The presentation will discuss clear objectives for such a budget as well as the necessary steps to achieve them. Also I will analyse the current situation and present proposals for upcoming legislation.
Another 45 FOSS projects have been selected for the #NGI0 Commons Fund. We want to thank the project teams for their contribution to a free and open internet. In a world increasingly in the grip of proprietary technologies and those who control them, we are proud to be supporting people who choose to work on the digital commons: shared digital assets that serve not the few but the many.
