I'm creating a Figma wireframing component library, inspired by one of my favorite apps: Frame0.

It's finally coming together! I will keep posting updates here.

I thought I was coming down with the flu last night but it seems I was just really really REALLY dry and dehydrated from heaters. and my innate idiocy. (“Why drink water when you’re not sweating?”)

everyone just buy a big daiso pot and fill it with water and walk around with it all the time

I'm sitting in the shade under a deck, watching birds at the feed station. The king parrots know who brings food, & are convinced I'm carrying. Two have been sent under the deck to glare & mutter. "The service here has really gone downhill, Beryl. I had to keep calling the waiter over. Harrumph. One star"

2-year-old Albanian boy fatally attacked by pitbull, Greek authorities considering whether animal should be executed byteseu.com/1606664/ #Albania

in reply to Futuro Prossimo

I am really saddened looking through issue trackers and finding how many people have done things like `pip install` to get Calibre dependencies, then been sad when nothing works. The fact that it's so far from standard build tooling has consequences, even if it's an understandable part of being a long-running project with a history.

The root cause for many of those errors is that Calibre depends on another of Kovid's packages, html5-parser, which in turn relies on lxml in a very odd way. In particular, it's only compatible with lxml if it's installed using `pip install --no-binary lxml` rather than from pyproject.toml.

That in turn seems, according to html5-parser documentation (not yet taken the time to confirm this myself), to cause *both* lxml and html5-parser to dynamically link libxml2 so that they can share the same C-level data structures.

Effectively, html5-parser seems to rely on internal implementation details of lxml in ways that completely break Python packaging. I get it gives a performance advantage, but at a steep cost.

I don't want to be too mean about this... Calibre is almost half a million lines of code, and has been around longer than Python 3 has. But also? I'm trying to point out that a large part of how we archive and read electronic books without fear of retroactive censorship is load-bearing on those five hundred thousand lines.

That is not sustainable, and not something that ever should have been placed on one person's shoulders.

I should have been more proactive on this, that's on me. But Calibre's recent AI betrayal has created a lot of new urgency here, and yeah. It's a wake up call for how bad the situation has gotten.

I've been working for two days on *trying to get Calibre to run locally*. I don't think I'm incompetent. Sure, I'm setting some requirements that make that a bit harder, but still. Too much is load bearing on one person and their decisions.

I feel like at the time html5-parser was implemented this was… perfectly fine. the python packaging ecosystem has changed since though.
in reply to Erin 💽✨

@erincandescent Yeah, as long as the lxml version was pinned specifically enough to avoid an ABI break there, the issue is more that python's packaging system straight up doesn't consider that some pairings of native modules might want to be built against the same ABI of some native dependency, as it doesn't even have the concept of non-python dependencies IIRC?
in reply to Emelia/Emi

I mean back in the Olden Days or if getting things from a distro package manager both would dynamically link against the distro libxml

Polymarket and Kalshi are NOT gambling companies. How could you say that?

I'm literally crying right now. When will the misinformation stop?

Please understand that it can't be gambling if there is a chart like it's the stock market and if there is an app where you can look at the chart before you bet- I mean invest in the prediction market.

Charts and graphs mean that this is science and science can't be gambling.

yeah and I mean obviously the stock market is not gambling on your expectations of other people’s expectations of your expectations
in reply to myrmepropagandist

I mean… short selling is kind of a prediction market…. But how about a prediction market on the death of public figures? No negative incentives there, right?
