A digital illustration depicts a person with a whimsical, anime-inspired design, framed by a dashed circle with paw prints and stars. The person has short, messy, reddish-brown hair with cat ears and amber eyes. They are holding a small, white octopus plushie to their chest with both hands, and are making a peace sign with the other hand. The person is wearing a large, cream-colored collar with a thick, dark teal ribbon and a white, pink-tinged robe-like garment. The illustration utilizes a bold, black outline and shading style, with highlights adding depth to the hair and features. There is no text present in the image.

I have a hunch, that there is some mathematical trick to speed this up. But I am thinking: "I need to sum up those numbers, so I don't only need to know how many there are, but also which ones there are. So I must somehow reach them."
I guess the puzzle could have sabotaged my approach with very long ranges though. Glad it did not.

Idle Sunday thoughts on why so many people love LLMs for 'editing' even though it gives that 'je ne sais quoi' of corporate blandness. I'd assumed it was the perceptual con: chatbots keep making generic statements that users interpret as specific

It works a bit like a "soup stone". You're the one providing the work, observation, and analysis—the ingredients—while the credit goes to the 'soup stone'. Except the stone is charging you Michelin star prices for the soup

it's funny, everyone where I work wants documentation. I write documentation. But they never seem to read the documentation. It's like the documentation is a security blanket. The specifics don't matter. As long as it exists, that is the main thing. Just in case. So they feel safe.

As someone has decided this week they'd like to take a document I wrote and use AI to change the format so it will be more useful, and in a faster and more efficient way than I can ostensibly wrote it maybe they just want a bland, updated document to continue that security blanket feel for the new season.

Agreed with your sentiment in general, but to nitpick one thing, the problem right now is that you're **not** charged Michelin star prices.

All the online LLMs are heavily subsidised, so why not throw your writing into one? It's not like it costs you anything and maybe the slot machine gives you some good output this time around.

As long as it's free, the bar for quality is on the floor.

Australia expects platforms to "stop under-16s from using VPNs" to evade social media ban

The regulator has refused to say how this will work in practice

"Aimed at under-16s" - kids famously being able to afford monthly VPN fees. To "stop the from visiting social media". Right... 😏

Now reading Connie Willis' Christmas stories. Highly recommended for those who (like me) fall in the intersection of people who love both science fiction and Christmas.

Didn’t the Toot! app on the iPad use to be able to post threads! Feel like I’m being gaslit by my software
in reply to Baldur Bjarnason

Found it. The app does the bullshit “hide features until we think you need them” thing that has been a bad idea for decades but devs keep repeating because they’re allergic to learning anything useful from other fields

Fedilab has that thread thingy always visible, and it also does first toot public, the rest unlisted -- as it should be imo.

Really terrified by centrists who think we just need to get trump/reform/fascism out of our system by going through a few years of it.

It does explain a lot of institutional collapse though
