Is there a psych term for the human tendency to not want to engage detection mechanisms because knowing means we have to do something about it? Big feels today as I forlornly at our positive family COVID test/pep talk myself about setting out glue traps to see if roaches are trying to invade again

And on that note, it's borne of a need to give children an edge because they are going to suffer discrimination and will need that edge to succeed (whereas resourced white people, especially dudes, can coast on mediocrity). It's understandable, but also grind culture is not good for kids or anyone

The actual scandal and injury to native-born workers is that corporations use H-1B to make it excessively risky for non-native workers to unite with the broader organized labor movement and bargain under the threat of withheld labor. But that's not the argument ANY of these assholes want to have

Dave Rahardja reshared this.

MAGA types are too deep in their own racism to do the math here but whew are Elon and Vivek ever making it more obvious than it's ever been for anyone ready to show some humility and put the facts in front of them together
in reply to Gwen Snyder is uncivil

And btw I frame this in terms of injury to native-born and "scandal" because if these folks ever managed that math, the rage would be unimaginable. The MORAL outrage here is of course the exploitation and degradation of immigrant labor first and foremost. They are closest to the pain.

I know it's a privilege to be able to scrounge together the cash for a molecular tester but man is it dispiriting being in a position where we are giving everyone around us the impression we are COVID Typhoid Marys because we have a tester that works and feel a responsibility to do exposure alerts

RE: bsky.app/profile/did:plc:di7ep…

We got the fall back to school COVID and now we have the winter holiday COVID, I despair

in reply to Gwen Snyder is uncivil

I also think probably it becomes "see they mask and STILL get COVID more than any of the rest of us" in the minds of a lot of folks even though the reality is that we simply have stronger detection protocols and make use of them

And welcome to the last this year, weekly development report from my #opensource projects. Same as in previous weeks, 3 of them got some updates: a roguelike game, #Nim binding to Nuklear library and a system cleaner for FreeBSD: www.laeran.pl.eu.org/blog/devblog... Happy weekend, everyone. 😀

I *have* fucked around with those people and I've gotten SWATted, had a hate rally called across the street from my home, had my building vandalized... They do not confine their disagreements to polite letters

I cannot wait to see how he tries to thread this needle. He loves Elon's money so much. And also he could not stomach the possibility of hardcore MAGA turning on him

RE: bsky.app/profile/did:plc:5gy3v…

in reply to Gwen Snyder is uncivil

What tickles me most is, he famously gives his cell number out to all the weirdos in the upper echelons of MAGAworld. So they are all screaming in his ear at this. And meanwhile Elon is at his elbow, being fucking annoying

What's most incredible about this is that these MAGA folks were too ignorant even to know these program EXISTED. They just vaguely hated immigrants before, now Elon's hipped them to the actual mechanism of how corporations leverage immigrant labor against US workers in a government sweetheart deal

RE: bsky.app/profile/did:plc:di7ep…

Elon really thought he could go to MAGA and be like "ok yes mass deportation EXCEPT for the indentured servitude visa program that corporations use SPECIFICALLY to undercut US-born worker wages and bargaining power" Amazing

(And by the way let me be clear on this, I am not in any way suggesting that these immigrant workers should not exist, the problem is that immigrants should not have to work as indentured servants in order to work here. I am for FREER immigration, not banning workers)

Does anyone partition beyond /boot /root swap? I didn't start breaking out /var /opt /tmp /usr/local, etc until I actually started working with Linux 20 years ago. Before then I was like "Its a desktop..." Just curious... #Linux #BSD #FOSS

Not sure if this is satire. Keep in mind however that Linux is a journey, not a destination. Like much in life, it will give what you put into it... #Linux #BSD #FOSS

RE: bsky.app/profile/did:plc:gmcmn…

Quite right.. Lets not forget also that tech is a force for good, too bad another thing that corrupts it is corporatism... #Linux #FOSS

RE: bsky.app/profile/did:plc:vgczn…

First of all, well done getting things up and running. Secondly, you've touched upon a key issue there is when attempting to encourage others to try Linux. One thing MS and Apple have done brilliantly, is to abstract the user experience from the inner workings of the OS. #Linux #FOSS

RE: bsky.app/profile/did:plc:rrrwb…

Some spectacular irony in Elon and Vivek et al. ginning up victory for a mass deportation-themed campaign, then thinking their newfound Trump adjacency makes them authoritative enough to go to MAGA and be like "actually tbh immigrants do work harder than u"
in reply to Gwen Snyder is uncivil

They really thought they'd bought everyone's unquestioning loyalty, not just Trump's
in reply to Gwen Snyder is uncivil

And the fact that Elon thinks HE is the golden example of why the U.S. needs to give more visas to immigrants of "exceptional intelligence" is just too rich. My guy you are literally IN THE ACT of disproving your assertions that you are 1) an asset to the nation and 2) not a shit-for-brains

Who else has that win98 to XP or Win7 to Win10 feel of coercion with Win10 not being updated in October? Linux has been my daily driver for over 15 years, but I kept a windows laptop around...
