πŸ‘‰ Why do people use Slackware?

One thing people often miss is continuity.
Slackware isn’t just technically stable , it’s culturally stable.

The same person, Patrick Volkerding, has guided it for 30 years with the same philosophy: don’t change things unless there’s a real reason.

For many users, that long-term trust matters more than new features.

You know what Slackware will be next year, and that’s rare today.

@aaron @Endof10 Ich habe mit #Slackware angefangen, bin dann wegen rpm zu #Redhat (damals noch nicht kostenlos zu haben) und dann um 2000 rum wegen apt zu #Debian. Letzteres verwende ich bis heute.

I booted one of the original Slackware ARM development machines this week.

It’s a StrongARM RiscPC, running a Slackware ARM system that was last booted in April 2008. There was a kernel mismatch between the public builds and the original development kernel, so it took some careful archaeology to get it running; but it did boot, and I was able to log in and explore.

Tiny note-to-self blog:

How I made #unicode work between my #slackware laptop and my #openbsd server.

Also featuring guest appearances by #xterm and #emacs.

Well I bit the bullet and upgraded the innerwebz box.
Built in 2009,it still works fine, just getting older and new versions of linux wont load.
I'll give it to my kid or make it a media box for the living room
I went to a new to me Intel Core I7 3rd Gen , Intel dx79to mainboard,and 64gb of ddr3 ram.
I tested it all barebone then loaded my drives and graphics and sound card
I put the #Slackware SSD in and fuckkkk it was in XFCE like a rocket.
I think I'm gonna have some fun with this.

Still using nvi on Slackware.

No plugins. No syntax highlighting. Just speed, predictability, and classic vi behavior, even with multi-GB files.

I wrote a short guide explaining why nvi still matters and how its architecture enables fast, low-memory editing.

They do; aria2 is pretty robost πŸ™‚ I remember when download resumption became a thing; it made downloading #RedHat and #Slackware iso files easier over modem in the 90s, lol.

Cool.

I do not understand this text "Slackware does not ship sudo by default" #slackware does come with sudo.

But one more little thing, in slackpkg section, you may want to note kernels should be installed manually. I never used slackpkg, but IIRC, automatically installing kernels broke boot on some people's system.

Also note the confg file slackpkg uses :)

If you want, I will look at my old notes and respond here if I see anything that should be noted.

Getting closer to finalising the RPi5 support in Slackware!

Spotify and Netflix running in @alien 's Ungoogled Chromium (with Widevine) on the Raspberry Pi 5. Thanks to @stormtracknole for patching the build script!

I dearly love #Slackware, don't get me wrong, but I have to say that, compared to #NetBSD it feels a bit on the heavier side, if you see what I mean...

Then again, I am doing a "slackpkg update" on a freshly installed VM, so there is that... πŸ€“

By the way, NetBSD is still looking for money to complete their 2025 fundraiser, so donate here: netbsd.org/donations/#how-to-d…

A minimal todo.txt manager I use on Slackware.

Just one shell function: edit, list, add, done, push.
Keeps everything versioned with Git.

Slackware was my first Linux distribution 30+ years ago. I've now come full-circle and it's running again on my laptop. It's like nothing has changed and I think that is awesome! Of course, things have changed, but I think you know what I mean.

Has anyone managed to boot the mainline kernel (from kernel.org, not RPi vendor fork) on the Raspberry Pi4 with its native bootloader ?

Without an initrd β†’ black screen.
With initrd + followkernel param β†’ rainbow screen.
No serial output in either case.
I'm using the correct DTB.

Same mainline kernel boots when chainloaded via U-Boot (as we do for Slackware on the RPi4).

I haven’t seen any recent reports of anyone getting this working β€” has anyone?

I’ve been using static-web-server to host a local mirror for my machines, and the experience has been excellent.

It’s incredibly fast, lightweight, and easy to run and perfect for those times when you just want to serve files without the overhead of a full web server like Apache.

To make it even simpler for Slackware users, I wrote the slackbuilds.org/repository/15.…
