I despise the double-s possessive as much as I love the Oxford comma.
in reply to Jeff Jarvis

Wish all would limit love/hate feelings for punctuation, not for people.

The kids spent a generation training for active shooter drills at their schools.

The protocol is “ABCD”:

Get (A)way
(B)arricade yourself
(C)onfront
(D)isarm – or, more likely, (D)eath

They know Bad Men™ when they see them.

Small, harmless asteroid burns up in Earth’s atmosphere over the Philippines.

AP reports: "The asteroid — about 3 feet (1 meter) across — was spotted by astronomers in Arizona and broke apart over the coast of the Philippines hours after the discovery. This space rock, dubbed 2024 RW1, is only the ninth to have been spotted before its impact."

Pamela Paul dredges up the broken-glass theory that enabled Guiliani's stop-and-frisk horrors to call for policing in the subways so we can have nice things like cloth seats like the London Underground. Yeah.

I am continually shocked that even the NYT finds Paul worth the column inches

Intel's Open-Source Vulkan Driver Will No Longer Warn Over Using Xe2 Graphics

With Linux 6.12 the Lunar Lake and Battlemage graphics are being enabled by default for out-of-the-box support with Intel's next-gen Xe2 graphics. Over in user-space the Intel OpenGL and Vulkan driver code has also begun enabling Xe2 graphics by default for use when running on Linux 6.12+. In Mesa besides no longer being hidden by the force probe option, a warn…

Went to our favorite plant nursery this past week to see what we could find. While there, the owner pointed to a pile of sad-looking parsley she was tossing out and said with a laugh, "If you want any, just take it. I know you people are butterfly freaks."

Little did she realize that she had given us more than she realized, because a few days later, look what we found hidden in the leaves.❣️

There are actually three, but the one pictured is the biggest. We brought them inside and set them up in a terrarium to keep them safe.

What a beauty! 🐛

Must be a nice place you are living in, if people know about your passions :)

@madeindex Our favorite plant nursery is family-owned and very small and only sells plants without pesticides, so we hit them up several times a year. We take them jam and wild rose salve and in exchange they occasionally throw in extra goodies for us. The vast majority of what we buy is for bees and butterflies. 🤣🤣

#Matomo (previously known as Piwik) not only supports live tracking (using an embedded JS script) but also access log parsing and import.

The latter method is the one I'm using on my sites and this has worked pretty good over all these years.

However I ran into a log import error this morning. The responsible #Python script just threw a JSONDecodeError, without a hint of the actual reason.

Described and solved in my latest blog post.

we got the keys for the new office. there's a handful of these mysterious wall plates there, I assumed it was a grille for some kind of intercom speaker.

then I found this plug, it comes out of a grey box that just says Philips on it.

what the heck is this?!

Michael Baentsch, creator of oqsprovider, is interested in the deployment of cryptographic technology in the internet.

The challenge he sees in this space is the "imperfect mode of cooperation" between hard-core cryptography and the practical integration thereof.

"The result in some cases are either overly complicated-to-use crypto applications or in the worst case, insecure ones."

Read Michael's interview to learn how oqsprovider addresses this challenge.

Part 2 in a series of interviews with developers about addressing the issues of today's internet.
