I'm not sure my blog _really_ qualifies as providing "news articles", but I enjoyed making the little tweak to take advantage of Mastodon 4.3s "author highlight for news articles".

I guess I can join #PortfolioDay today. I do amateur astrophotography. I spend most of my time on deep space targets, but I had the opportunity to go see and photograph the total solar eclipse this past April.

Here are a few of my favorite photos I've taken of the amazing stuff that's out there.

The Horsehead Nebula is a dark cloud in front of a red cloud of dust that has some almost vertical striations above the Horsehead and a horizontal line that's brighter and goes behind the middle of the Horsehead. The Flame Nebula is to the left of the Horsehead and rotated about 90 degrees counterclockwise. It looks like a flame, but instead of the flames going up, they radiate from a point. The nebula is mostly orange, with a little bit of blue and a dark structure that runs through it, like the trunk and branches of a tree.

If anyone who isn't from an area that gets tropical weather is curious, the red line on the right is the distance from #Tampa to #FortMyers, about a 2-hour drive. The red line on the left, which is identical, is #HurricaneMilton. Almost all of what you see is tropical storm-strength winds <75mph. #Hurricane winds are currently in a band about 25 miles from the eye (and the 180mph winds are in an area less than ONE MILE across). It's an astonishingly small storm (it will get bigger but weaker).
