How a year of war laid waste the #Gaza Strip – visualised - theguardian.com/world/2024/oct… such a tragic pointless waste of lives, homes and more #israel
in reply to Glyn Moody

it's a #genocide fueled by the religiously-charged nationalist-colonialist ideology of Zionism. Mind you, #Israel (which is an #Apartheid regime) follows the "Israel for ethnically and religiously 'pure' Jews" principle - just like the Greek junta's "Ελλάς Ελλήνων Χριστιανών" (Greece for Christian - Orthodox, let's be clear abou that - Greeks). Essentially, it wants to be a theocracy like #Iran.

also, I have to be abundantly clear that the German Pirate Party (which should have been rejected already as far back as 2019 with the #GillesBordelais scandal) is openly supporting the #genocide and conflates anti-zionism (opposition to the religiously-charged ethnic cleansing) with anti-semitism in an official position paper. Yet, it gets to call the shots in the Pirate Parties International and the European Pirate Party for some reason.

In the strange world of #Valheim, Asch has seen many things. Giant blue trolls, abominations, mosquitoes the size of eagles. But sometimes it is the simple things that are most surprising, like when they cut through a tree and it was left balanced perfectly. No other trees around it to hold it up.

An Israeli airstrike on a school sheltering displaced people in central Gaza killed at least 28 people, including women and children, on Thursday, while three hospitals in the north were told to evacuate putting patients' lives at risk, medics say.

The strike, in which many more were wounded, happened in the city of Deir Al-Balah, where a million people have taken shelter after fleeing fighting elsewhere after more than a year of war.

Science Illustration: A Creative Door for Early Women in Science.

At the dawn of the 1900s, science remained a domain largely inaccessible to women. Despite societal constraints, a select group of pioneering women found a path to contribute to science through illustration.

In the 1970s (I recall) one of the best things about Scientific American magazine was its illustrations. The colors were vivid, the artwork first class. The pictures could "pull" you into reading the article. That seems to be gone, and I still miss it.

Walz is, of course, right about this racist institution. The Atlantic spoke out in agreement ... in 1880:

The electoral college is not an overtly undemocratic way of electing the US president. It will not vault an unpopular person into the position.

Partisan Democrat supporters still are still blaming the college for Donald Trump being a viable candidate in 2016.

in reply to Jeff Jarvis

Until the rules are changed, the EC is the way to elect the president.

I have an article about the EC:

tiereddemocraticgovernance.org…

The main point is that if the USA did not have the EC, it would be much smaller than it is today.

The states have the right to change their EC votes to better represent the preference of their voters. But too many vested interests are protecting their interests.

in reply to Jeff Jarvis

@davevolek 👏 More than that even, one of the roles of the EC was to be a safeguard against someone like Trump: theatlantic.com/politics/archi… -- having a group of electors who could prevent a foreign power from propping up an ignorant, populist candidate was one of the purposes of the EC.

That was the *only reason* to have an electoral college in a modern, egalitarian era, and they failed the country by waving him in in 2016. They serve no purpose except to enforce minority rule.

Kazakhstan Intensifies Efforts to Preserve Northern #Aral Sea, as Water Levels Rise - astanatimes.com/2024/10/kazakh… "only 350-400 million cubic meters of water entered the sea. Since the beginning of the year, the volume has exceeded two billion cubic meters"

De-growth sounds great. But how do we "live a bit more simply"? I'm living simply but I need healthcare. I rely on an NHS actually free at the point of use, not one that's being sliced up for privatisation as the rich want. Wes Streeting loves the US private health businesses of the USA. I live simply, but have to use water. Taken over by the neoliberals. Labour won't take water companies into public ownership. Neoliberalism rules. #De-growth #economics

Happy #WorldSightDay!

To promote the importance of accessibility on social media, I'd like to propose a community action: When you see an image posted on your feed without alt text, instead of boosting it, or asking the person who posted it to add it, consider replying with your own description, together with the hashtag "Alt4You".

Trouble writing alt text for your own images? Tag your post with "Alt4Me", and someone will help you out!

in reply to Stefan Bohacek

This is great advice. My personal rule is I don't boost stuff without alt text, unless I (or in rare cases, someone else) has added an #Alt4You reply. Also if there's room I try to add something like: "please consider adding alt text to your images, it helps keep the fedi accessible. Feel free to use or adapt this description!"
