The actors are pretty lousy, but why do they feel like bad actors? Part of it is the mis-match in their acting styles -- the dad is very low-energy, while the mum plays every emotion at 150%. But neither is a nuanced performance, there's no subtlety in any of it. They play what's on the page and absolutely nothing more.
This is made worse by how much of this is in close-up. The mum is constantly in your face. Which means if you don't believe the performance, you /really/ won't believe the performance.
A good chunk of this is obvious haunted doll clichés executed cheaply and poorly, but because it can't afford to /show/ anything, it has to fill time -- the parents have long conversations about stuff that doesn't matter, we watch the mum wander around the house for fucking yonks.
On an aesthetic level, this also falls flat -- a proper mainstream scarem tends to be set in a really defined place and time. Think about how long every "Conjuring" spends establishing each movie's well-designed house, by the time the story really kicks off you have a good grasp of what's where, who's where, what the scary bits are.
But this is just some random house in England. It never /feels/ like "the house from the Robert movie," because the Robert movie is just utterly uninterested in it as anything but the place where Robert has to do his business. (The business is a number two.)
Half the time the (cheap and generic-sounding) score feels like it's missing. There's places where you'd expect some kind of sting, some kind of audio injection responding to something creepy, and it just doesn't happen. The son calmly announced "oh, Robert wouldn't like that, he'd be very mad" is a common cliché, but can land very well. Here it's /nothing/ because it's a slightly overshaken handheld shot with no sting.
Look, a real person wouldn't believe the doll was doing anything because that's a fake idea, but also, look at that thing, it's so obviously the most cursed thing in the world.
Incompetent in essentially every way, but not even particularly interestingly so. Like, would I say this is an absolutely explosive diarrhoea spray of a film? No. It's just a regular ol' bad case of the runs.
Essentially a Starfleet movie if space was wet and the founding of Starfleet depended entirely on poldering hard enough to create Flevoland. Very Dutch film.
It's the monomyth again, barely has an antagonist, and the way out of the belly of the whale is a literal portal to the third act, where they fight, you guessed it, an energy cloud,
but they sensibly double down on the stuff I liked in the first one, and add Moana-- Vaiana-- Oceania-- Moana's two autistic besties to the cast, so I basically had a good time.
I've seen this described as Irish "Princess Kaguya," which may be the unfairest comparison possible. You're not gonna win that one. But if it even gets close...
Structurally falls apart a little in the third act, but that's observation, not complaint -- it's a gorgeous enough work of art that the very idea of taking any kind of issue with it is just preposterous. Like giving notes to a mountain range.
If creepy anachronistic 9-year olds came into my bedroom to show me home movies of themselves dying to death, I feel like I would not be this chill about that.

Some of the one-on-one scenes with Spock, Kirk, McCoy are pretty funny, with Ömer playing off their well-defined personalities, but as soon as there's a woman in the room, I wanna drop Ömer off in a black hole.

Fascinating as a cultural artefact -- technically, this is the first Star Trek film -- but, and I acknowledge that I exist substantially removed from this in both time and culture, aggressively unfunny to me.
In his opening spiel he's very clear that he believes he's managed to keep Graboids contained to the North American continent, ergo, cut to South Africa.
I know these are two extremely emotionally closed-off men, but 100% of their dialogue is either, yelling about wanting something from the other, yelling about not wanting to talk about something, or yelling some snarky shit.
the effect of an Ass Blaster hitting a small plane's front propeller is apparently for it to explode like a balloon full of ketchup, and that's enough to take out the engine completely
The entire supporting cast is South Africans who either don't hide their accents at all or try to do /something/ with it but end up less in Canada and more in something Transatlantic if marbles for chewing on were distributed freely between takes
After a few early scenes in the "snow" they're not even bothering with sand-for-snow any more, it's just South Africa with snowy mountaintops CGI'd onto the horizons.
