psa: the music player can read my music folder

no freaking way... im freaking out right now about this... i didn't realise that.

uninstalling this unsafe application!!!

the flathub "safety" guidance is such a fucking joke it's not even funny.

in reply to misyl

I've brought this issue up many times, almost every single app on Flathub is "unsafe" because most applications cannot operate in a pure sandbox, that'll get even worse as we start getting portals for USB devices. Literally every app will be marked as unsafe and if everything is called unsafe then either Flathub was a bad idea or more likely it's not a great way to categorize applications.
in reply to Brodie Robertson

if everything is unsafe, then nothing is unsafe and this whole thing loses its meaning
in reply to misyl

yeah that however is 100% true, ultimately they have to find a new metric that scales to a bunch of apps and conveys the implications better for their safety rating.
in reply to Nova🐧✨

Honestly they should just not over think it and do what the mobile stores do and just list it out as permissions
in reply to Brodie Robertson

@BrodieOnLinux @technobaboo it's not really possible to do that because unlike the mobile ecosystem, pc apps are not designed with fine grained capabilities in mind. so you end up having to have these ultra non-intuitive things in the list like "gives access to the system dbus socket" or "uses a legacy windowing system (x11)" which are both entirely irrelevant to security, and completely incomprehensible to anybody not writing desktop linux applications.
in reply to Brodie Robertson

@BrodieOnLinux The "potentially unsafe" rating comes from "static permissions", i.e. the flatpak manifest containing permissions to (potentially) poke a hole in the sandbox. If an app starts using the portal for USB access, it can drop the static `all` or at least `usb` device permission.

Portals are the thing that apps have to use to not get classified as "potentially unsafe" and that's why we're trying to add more portals for the remaining use cases.

Antarctic krill trap vast amounts of carbon from the atmosphere in the ocean floor through their sinking fecal pellets, a new study reports.

The annual amount is similar to that stored by “blue carbon habitats” such as mangroves, seagrass and salt marshes, highlighting the importance of protecting krill.

Proba-3: Not because it is easy…

image

Image/photo Video: 00:01:54

Not because it is easy but because it is hard: this historic space phrase is pretty much the definition of ESA’s double-satellite Proba-3 mission, which will employ precise formation flying to produce artificial total solar eclipses in orbit, casting a shadow from one spacecraft to the other. No-one has ever flown a mission like this, up until now. But just why is it so hard? Find out in this curtain-raising video trailer.

Dia Al-Azzawi. Al-Mu'allaqat 3, 1978.

I've posted this Iraq-born artist before, but I've been thinking on several of his older pieces today. We are facing total ruin and real horrors. People all around me seem to be in denial about imminent devastation that in my opinion cannot now be stopped. There is mourning, but maybe also a stubborn quiet celebration, inside those moments of terrible realization. Horror mingled with gratitude: That is also human art.
