Encounter on the back fence this morning. Squirrels were trying to chase this Coopers hawk out of the garden and at one point approached it from both sides, making it flutter up before landing again. They weren't really in danger. It was after the many small birds that were there before it arrived. #birds #squirrel #nature #hawk

Day 20: it's the last day before the solstice! I'm getting ready to celebrate increasing sunlight in the days to come. 🌞

This is a vintage tole chandelier that I painted with oil paints after having removed the wiring and primed the metal with self-etching primer. I adore the profusion of vibrant flowers.

I was thinking that I might greet the shortest day of the year by watching the sun rise over the sea. But it’s Saturday and early and the first day of my Christmas holidays, and it’s dark and raining out there and it’s candlelit and not raining in here, so here’s one I prepared earlier.
‘Twas the sunrise before the winter solstice. Looking east, not long after 8 am, the sun is slowly starting to rise. This is yesterday, when I had to be up and out anyway before sunrise. Water’s edge, mid-city Aarhus, Denmark. The sky is cloudless and purple-blue with a burst of orange. The sea is calm, dark blue, almost black, with reflections of sunrise orange. Along the opposite piers, dark silhouettes of buildings and cranes in different shapes and heights, dominated by a 75 metre crane shaped like an angular giraffe. Sailing by the opening of the port, a gigantic cruise ship, one of those that has room for about 5000 guests. Dots of warm yellow light glow from windows in the cruise ship and the buildings, making an almost Christmas light effect. Right in front of us where we’re standing on the promenade, actual Christmas lights twinkle from decorations wrapped around an anchored white paddle boat and the harbour railings.
