Weeeeell, as someone who moved from windows to Mint a few weeks back, Steam and proton have had a big hand in that, so I wouldn't say it's a good example of "doing nothing".
Edit: granted, Microsoft constantly shooting their own feet doesn't help, but Steam broke the cage by providing what was missing.
Not to downplay what Valve and all of the countless Linux contributers are doing and have accomplished, but I wouldn't be on Linux if Windows hasn't gone to shit.
I was basically a 30 year long Windows fanboy. It got so bad that it drove me away. And now I'm a Linux fanboy.

Stability, reliability, don't fix it if it ain't broke.
Some companies have a need to reinvent them every 6 months to justify some middle Manager's existence so they can pad their resume for the next overpaid job position.
This Is what it looks like when you don't have that problem

This actually just describes the main problem in almost every industry these days. Companies are so large and have so many people running them that at each rung of the ladder, priorities are completely different since it's impossible for someone in middle management to have any clue what's going on in manufacturing, or vice versa.
Then all of them get overshadowed equally by the monetary priorities of the CEO.
As soon as the fediverse becomes an actual threat, the ban hammer is going to come down on anonymous social media
I'm honestly surprised it hasn't happened yet
It would probably be something like: "any social media site made available to US users must verify user identities and legal name and age and comply with US agencies' requests for user information. Violators will be subject to penalty, including but not limited to economic sanction and imprisonment"
Yes, there would be ways around it and yes, there would be nations who would not enforce it, but there being legal barriers to operating an instance would basically kill its adoption for normal users. I'm really tired of people saying 'you can just get a vpn' as if most people would go to any length at all to share memes with friends. The fediverse is already too complicated for most people to adopt before having to circumvent region blocks.
Which would increase their effort to chase it down and make regular people avoid it.
Not that it would deter you, but the network would essentially stop growing and no longer be a real competitor
Couldn't have social media without Americans.
Actually wait yes can we apply this to Lemmy?

Is it even a competition?
Afaik, lemmy doesn't compete. It just exists, and makes no effort as an entity to expand.
I'm not even sure if there are individual instances that do anything to seek out users, much less try to take them from other places.

I think you just need to promote it at the right time to the right audience, and suggest the right instances. People who are saying they're sick of Reddit, especially when Reddit does something to shoot themselves in the foot. I think just trying to force it onto people will have the opposite effect.
@Blaze@feddit.org puts a lot of effort into promoting Lemmy on Reddit, they'll have some decent input on how to promote it!
There's also !fedigrow@lemm.ee which is a community around this kind of thing if you're interested.
No, if there's too hard of a push to get users then lemmy earns itself a bigger gun behind the crosshairs that are already aimed it (by platforms like Reddit).
If we have any hope of growing Lemmy into what it can eventually be, we need the growth to be gradual. As painstaking and aggravating as that might be.
It's simply because the product is far superior to all other solutions on the market.
Not due to tricks, or marketing, or any weird strategies, but by simply solving the distribution problem for both the developers and consumers.
Yes all billionaires need to give up their wealth or literally be eaten, and all capitalism is inherently evil, but if we were to rank evil from least to most as especially liberals do in all other circumstances, then gaben and steam are on the least evil side of the spectrum.
But surely those gamers that worship Gabe just do it for the memes right? (Don't answer)

Disney’s streaming business posts another profit.
Last year’s price hikes helped Disney Plus, Hulu, and ESPN Plus bring in a $293 million profit during the last three months of 2024, making it the second profitable quarter in a row. However, Disney Plus lost around 700,000 subscribers, bringing its total to 124.6 million globally.

It can vary. lemmy.world and join-lemmy links are often removed, to the point I think some subs flag them automatically. Links to other instances see solid. I just checked and I have made a dozen posts on Reddit with links to Lemmy in the last day and they are all still up. I will push my luck too far soon though, I'm sure.

But.
Using AI for nuclear weapon security does not necessarily mean using AI to decide whether or not you're going to launch nuclear weapons. It could also mean using AI for securing the systems (which is bad enough on its own, I agree)
Allie!
in reply to Kim Possible • • •I loathe OpenAI but this article is clickbait.
They’re not putting in it charge of anything and I highly doubt ever will, but there are safety concerns about models spelling out instructions in a way that motivated groups could leverage nefariously which is about the only actual safety issue there is wrt LLMs.
GebAI isn’t going to decide to launch nuclear weapons.
