Laetitia Vançon’s series Tribute to Odesa is a personal tribute to the resilience and quiet defiance she encountered in Odesa, Ukraine, a city of strategic and symbolic importance. The war was present in the sea, in the air and in every story Vançon encountered.

In his series Alfredo Jaar documents the Great Salt Lake, Utah, which is being destroyed by excessive water extraction and has become what scientists have described as an ‘environmental nuclear bomb’. A keystone ecosystem for the western hemisphere, sustaining rainfall and providing a habitat for 10 million migratory birds, it has lost 73% of its water ...

As Rachel Wolf argues, one key to starting to resolve that part of the housing crisis related to building houses (yes, there are other aspects, not least of all renters' rights) is for this (or any) Govt. to stop trying to assuage local objectors to housing & rather recognise a social need that needs to be built even if locals object to new housing.
Its an argument that may have some merits, but only if you think building more houses *is* the answer!

To solve the housing crisis will take some electoral pain
If we could build 50,000 homes in London in a year in the 30s, we can surely do the same thing nowRachel Wolf (The Observer)
The UK government thinks we live in a topsy-turvy wonderland, where share prices hitting record highs every month this year are caused by lack of share investment, and continuous house price rises by the difficulty banks have getting money into the housing market.
Why do they need to to be told by young youtubers that the problem here is not too little money - it's too much ?
@GeofCox @InsurgoFormica @KimSJ
yes, redirection of the flow of money into productive investment rather than asset speculation is one key issue, certainly, but not something that will be at the forefront of the strategy discussions of a political class dominated by landlords (and asset holders) of course
As Richard Murphy has pointed out this morning, in 1975, 80% of government housing expenditure went on the construction of social housing; by 2000, 85% was instead going directly to landlords, via housing benefit.
Socialism for the rich...
@GeofCox
I posit that it's not amount of money, it's where the money is located, hoarded, pet and fondled like Epstein victims by a monied class that is using it to keep score rather than doing anything useful.
Yes - exactly. The reality we need to adjust to has been described clearly enough by Thomas Piketty: since, in developed economies, the rate of return from assets becomes higher than that from enterprise, private investment flows into assets. Moreover, the rate of return on sustainable investment (eg retro-fitting home insulation) is particularly poor.
The obvious answer is to remove money from the wealthy, who have more than they can usefully employ, to enable public investment in what is really needed, and the distribution of more money to the hard-pressed, who will inject it straight back into circulation.
Guillotines - are they all bad ?
Seriously - all any of us can do is what I guess most of us already are doing: campaigning, speaking and voting for the left/green, and (here, for example) equipping each other with the ideas, evidence and arguments for good policy choices.
@ApostateEnglishman @GeofCox @InsurgoFormica @KimSJ
I mean, we are/have depending on expert, reached the point where wealth inequality is more than it was at the point of the French Revolution.
We have not (yet) gotten to a point where food insecurity hits half the population, but we are not far from it. We are at 25% in the US currently. The current US regime is doing everything in its power to make sure a starvation event occurs.
What I think they have failed to take into account is how heavily armed the crazy section of society is. Like, I know people with enough guns to outfit a militia. More than a few, actually. And big freaking guns too, like I didn’t know you could own weapons like that as a civilian, and I’m a certified marksman.
Honest to god, I fear what’s coming in the US.
@MissConstrue @GeofCox @InsurgoFormica @KimSJ Yeah, an old pal of mine knows the fella who owns the largest private collection of decommissioned, but mostly still operative military hardware in the UK. We're talking actual working tanks, stacks of old rifles from WWII - all sorts. I have often wondered what would happen if *that* guy went crazy and decided to go on a killing spree.
The thing is in the USA, there are millions of that guy.

An injured child was asked: “Get well soon, little hero. What’s wrong?”
He didn’t say he was waiting outside the operating room for his turn. He didn’t mention the bombing that shattered his life. He didn’t complain. He didn’t ask for anything. He didn’t say much at all...
Just one word spoken with broken eyes lifted upward: “Hungry.”
That’s it. Just… hungry. So simple, yet it crushed the heart.

Today makes 24 years since hundreds of thousands of people gathered in Genoa to oppose the summit of the eight most powerful governments in the world—the G8. The demonstrations in Genoa represented the high-water mark of an era of global protest, in which both confrontational tactics and police repression reached their apex. In a new era of uprisings, we stand to learn a lot from studying previous cycles of resistance.

"Avec Haïr le monde, recueil de textes et de poésies dédié « aux irrécupérables / aux casse-couilles / et aux mécontents », Leïla Chaix rue joliment dans les brancards. Réhabilitant la haine comme moteur du jaillissement des affects, elle plante un clou bien raide dans le cercueil de notre civilisation agonisante. Elle est colère, Leïla Chaix. Elle est rage, dégoût et éruption. Et elle le crie bien"
