Today in Labor History July 21, 1920: Thousands of Belfast shipyard, factory and mill workers were expelled from their jobs as the "Belfast Pogrom" began. Also known as the 1920s Troubles, the pogrom was a two-year period of violence between Protestant loyalists in Northern Ireland, who wanted to remain part of the UK, and Catholic Republicans, who wanted to join the Republic of Ireland, to the south. Over 500 people were killed in Belfast and 23,000 were made homeless by the conflict. The majority of victims were Catholic.
