Japan's Finance Minister said he’s worried by movements in the yen, which weakened to levels last seen in March following dovish messaging on interest rates from the Bank of Japan. japantimes.co.jp/business/2025… #business #economy #katsunobukato #boj #japaneseeconomy
in reply to The Japan Times

I am also worried about movements in the yen, because the Japanese can put that number anywhere they want just by hiking interest rates and repatriating foreign financial investments.

The U.S. wants to track the location of every #AI microchip. And it also wants the power to remotely shut them down. Can the rest of the world stomach the risks?

A top letter proposing that the Greens and YourParty should have a pact not to compete. This should be wider and include the other progressive parties, LibDem, Plaid Cymru and so on. * As long as they are all Pro-EU *.

And that's the problem with YourParty right now. We have no idea what they actually want, apart from "Not Labour, Not Right Wing".

in reply to Final Round Player 😷🇪🇺🍸

Your Party has no policies yet. I expect there to be two conferences. The first to set up as a party, the second to decide the first wave of policies decided democratically. So that will be a constitutional conference, followed by a policy conference. One of those will elect the leader and deputy because all they have right now are facilitators.

European publishers say the EU is giving in to AI

Forty European and global organizations, including the Federation of European Publishers, have issued a joint statement formally complaining to the European Commission about the implementation measures for the European Union AI Act.

I'm glad to announce the release of version 2.81 of #snac, the simple, minimalistic #ActivityPub instance server written in C. It includes the following changes:

If the propagate_local_purge configuration variable is set to true in server.json, purged local posts generate a Delete activity that is sent everywhere, instead of only deleted from the filesystem.

Included a small tweak to avoid being confused by implementations that return valid webfinger queries for non-account URLs (like i.e. the Wordpress ActivityPub plugin in some configurations). This helps in searching by URL.

Added Ukrainian translation (contributed by wincentbalin).

New command-line option muted, to list all MUTEd actors.

Mastodon API: Fixed metadata and follower approval flag when editing the account.

Thank you! (and thanks to wincentbalin as well to any other contributors I may have missed)

I submitted a Pull Request to update MacPorts' snac to 2.81 here:

github.com/macports/macports-p…

GitHub Actions' Continuous Integration checks has passed OK, which hopefully is a good sign?

It's up to someone else with commit access to merge it.

(As a total aside, given the comam.es .es TLD; I'm guessin you're in Spain? I have tentative plans to attend the MIRA Festival [mostly to see Amnesia Scanner] in November. Albeit, that's in Barcelona and I vaguely understand there are linguistic, cultural and socio-political differences? I've never visited before; but thought I would mention it as a possibility to meet up AFK maybe!)

I see this so often when I'm visiting reserves with "Ground-nesting birds. Please keep dogs on leads." notices. It's not as if there aren't a shit load of places that aren't nature reserves they could be walked at.

Return of Biden, Harris snags Democrats’ push to turn the page on 2024 washingtonpost.com/politics/20…
in reply to Jeff Jarvis

No, I agree completely with that editorial. I voted for Harris, but this is what essentially all of the American working class wants:

- higher minimum wage
- lower housing costs
- lower medical costs
- lower taxes on the working class
- reversing inflation

Harris ran on *none* of those things, and it's part of the reason she lost. (The other part is bigotry and stupidity by Trump supporters, but that's a separate topic.)
