Walter. Happy 4th Gotcha Day. Rescued by the @official_scottishspca from a shed where he’d lived for one and a half years, feral and frightened to this funny, brave boy who we couldn’t imagine being without. #adoptdontshop

We've pouring over the maps and the video to see what the hey happened up there. Worried that the new plantation up on that hill might have something to do with it. Hoping Weyerhauser didn't cut too many corners.
in reply to KayJanes

@KayJanes yeah, really hard to say

logging certainly can trigger slides, but the stand in there looks pretty good-sized (albeit a traditional Weyco monoculture) so idk

Oregon forestry rules around landslides could use a lil reinforcement, I think...like most private lands forestry in the PNW...but without seeing some review from landslide geologists I don't want to pre-judge

in reply to Sara

Exactly. We're sitting in our homes looking at maps and video trying our best, yet ....
My N was a forester in the PNW before retirement. We happened to live on the coast to the north and were living there when the big Garibaldi landslide happened.

@KayJanes yeah, my field time in WA with geos makes me think that sometimes hills just fall down and it's not really within human control

the part we can control is whether and how we build infrastructure in vulnerable places

I looked at a house here where the backyard was a headscarp -- "great views" -- sloping floors! -- no thanks!

in reply to Sara

True. Some hills are much less stable and then here come the people.
We live on a hillside with a ton of springs. A builder came in within the past of couple of years to put houses up on an old tree farm and has discovered that it's a bit .... complicated.

@KayJanes I wonder how much of this was hydrologically driven, given the recent atmospheric river and associated high river levels.

i knew bits & pieces of this before, but not the full calamity as summarised here

abc.net.au/news/2025-12-13/age…

i read it with my jaw progressively nearing the floor.

so much, so very much, is wrong here, but this bit truly enraged me, that labor is still daring to trot out this LIE:

The government says it can't sustain the budget with our aging population, which is why the "user pays" system is entirely fair

For the beauty of the earth,
For the glory of the skies,
For the love which from our birth
Over and around us lies—

For the wonder of each hour,
Of the day and of the night,
Hill and vale, and tree and flow’r,
Sun and moon, and stars of light—

For the joy of human love,
Brother, sister, parent, child,
Friends on earth and friends above,
For all gentle thoughts and mild—
