And yet, global fossil fuel consumption and CO2 emissions continue to rise. Growth in CO2 concentration is accelerating not slowing. We're still following a Business As Usual 1.0 track.

Roughly 13GtC/Yr turned into 40GtCO2/yr and 60GTCO2e until the 1TtC of accessible fossil carbon is all gone.

in reply to Final Round Player 😷🇪🇺🍸

It's not all bad though! we were heading for +4C by 2100. Now the rapid growth in renewables means we're only heading for +2.5C by 2100. Maybe.

So even though fossil fuel consumption, CO2 production and CO2 atmospheric concentration is still growing, some of the potential growth has been replaced by renewable sources. It's just not growing as fast as it might have been.

So there's that.

Neon Rain 25 Part II
Following on from yesterday's post featuring four images of backlit rainwater pooled on glass, where I focused on the rainwater, I wanted to show how just the slightest change in focus can alter the outcome.
In these four images I manually focused beyond the glass and the effect is quite different, making the lights themselves more the subject while the water on the glass becomes a refraction filter.

The multi-tones are very satisfying here. And yes, the structure of the light sources comes into play here more than the structure of the surface.

@ewen It's an interesting exercise to just run through the manual focus range and watch what happens through the viewfinder. It's what passes for fun in a Scottish winter 😂

Fungi by Pablo Navarro Simarro, 2025

The aim of this volume is to provide food scientists, biotechnologists and biochemists with a compilation of protocols focused on the extraction of bioactive compounds from fungi. Across its 21 chapters, the volume explores three fundamental areas: the extraction, quantification, and identification of fungal bioactive compounds; the evaluation of their effects on health; and the development of novel functional foods.

Given their nutritional composition, many researchers and companies are working to develop functional foods based on mushrooms, or even to use filamentous fungi to valorize other food matrices and enhance their properties. In the first case, we highlight the use of mushroom flours to fortify bakery products, their application as flavor enhancers, and their use as a basis for biodegradable food packaging films.

In the second case, techniques such as liquid and solid-state fermentation stand out as some of the most promising methods for producing pigments, microbial protein, or meat analogues. These techniques are inspired by traditional fermentation processes used to prepare foods such as tempeh or oncom.

A key issue over the next four years will be how ReformUK's conduct & practice in local Govt. impacts on their polling & electoral chances in 2029?

Helen Pidd has been keeping a close eye on Reform's Lancashire County Council over the last seven months & presents an interesting picture of fragmentation & (often) inaction, and opposition within the Council.

There's plenty of time for things to develop, but already critics can seize on miss-steps & prejudice.

I think the parallel is with Lib Dems, albeit in the other direction: they're seen as competent at a local level, but not trusted in national government.

Cognitive dissonance isn't an impediment for anybody who can look at Farage and think him suitable for election, so my prediction is that future voters will revert to electing traditional parties to local government, but Reform to national: this early foray into bottom-up control will be largely forgotten.

But a periodic reminder that Reform is elected not through overwhelming support, but because the 70% of the population repulsed by it can't find a way to work together.

in reply to Badgardener

yes, your last point is telling & indicates the real problem - the difficulty is in the assembling of a popular front - especially one that included Labour

@carlmorris just getting out the popcorn for when this goes full tit-for-tat and Reform starts publicising the extent to which Labour has been bought by Larry Ellison (via Tony Bliar), Peter Theil (Palantir), Private Health Companies, etc., etc.

The fact that the rest of the world, most notably our NATO allies, recognizes Trump as a Putin puppet while his MAGA base refuses to admit it should be infuriating to every patriotic American.

These ai MFers really think I don’t remember them tryin to sell me the metaverse like TWO YEARS AGO.

Nobody bats a thousand but Silicon Valley is a disease. I’m seriously in “take away their money because they clearly can’t be trusted to play nice with their toys” mood tonight.
