Is the only way to trigger on a helper value changing listening to the state_changed event with filtering on your entity_id? Seems a bit weird that HA knows the state has changed but you don’t seem to be able to trigger off the helper directly (unless I’ve missed something obvious in the automation creation screen…)

So as you know I'm looking at repurposing an old Dell Optiplex 3080 tower as an #OpenBSD server. It's already got 32GB ram and a 1Tb NVME drive. I was thinking about adding some spinning rust for the data drive but I'm unsure whether to just add one hard drive as I'll be doing regular backups to NAS anyway. Or should I spend more purchasing two of the same drives for my usual RAID 1 setup like I did with my #FreeBSD server Beastie ?
Was looking at ways saving some £££ but maybe it's not a good idea ? It would eventually be hosting the following if possible. Snac instance, static website, git with cgit, Radicale, Syncthing and maybe a few more much much later.

if you're backing up regularly to the NAS anyway, then just save the cash and roll with one drive. Increase how often you do backups to the NAS to something you can tolerate.

If mission-critical data loss prevention is most important, then it's not actually "cost savings" to skip the extra disk...BUT, I would then argue you should put that money in to some sort of off-site 3rd backup location instead of a second drive in the server. (i.e. Trusted commercial cloud storage provider, friend/family's house, etc.)

Having 3 tiers, with at least one of them being off-site, is going to get you closer to a really robust setup than an extra drive will in this scenario.

Thank you so much for that detailed explanation and I am indeed considering an offsite backup too.
