I started my career in quantitative genetics, working on gene x environment interactions. But it became “unsexy.” Everyone was focused on “the gene for this trait.” So, I moved on. Now, almost 30 years later, I read in @WIRED … (1/n)

“Rather than revealing the genetic origins of disease, genomics has done the opposite. Only 10 percent of breast cancer cases are purely genetic. Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease? Rheumatoid arthritis? Coronary heart disease? All hover around 20 percent. The primary driver of disease is considerably more terrestrial: It’s the environment, stupid.”

I hope today’s quantitative geneticists get more respect, but capitalism will balk at this result. It makes companies culpable… (3/n)

If the causes are largely environmental, then companies that produce these toxic compounds can no longer blame us for our genes. Instead, they will need to clean up their acts. Many of my friends, family, and acquaintances have suffered or are suffering from these “genetic” but really environmental or gene x environmental diseases. We, the people, must demand that billionaires stop reaping the benefits of our suffering. And media must reveal this. (4/n)

minor clarification: @ rmc is a regional group, for "Região Metropolitana de Campinas" meaning the city of Campinas (in the state of São Paulo) and its neighbors.

SARS-CoV-2 needs to be understood as a virus that weaponizes the immune system. Most, if not all of the post-acute sequelae are likely to be downstream of its dysregulation of the immune system. The more it dysregulates the immune system, the less effective vaccines will be at preventing the virus from dysregulating it further, even if they succeed at preventing acute hospitalization.

So you’re an Austrian Jewish couple who fled WW1 to settle in New York and open a deli. You’re proud your oldest graduated Cornell and is going to law school but it’s the Jazz Age and he sold a song, and insanely decides that songwriting is his love, so moves to Hollywood and signs up with Disney.

His younger brother takes his journalism degree and similarly wastes it, running to the Brill Building in the Big Band era, where he meets Burt Bacharach.

That’s how Mack David and Hal David started.

We got Bond themes and Bibbidi Bobbidi Boo and all of Dionne Warwick and Raindrops and Baby It’s You and To All The Girls I’ve Loved Before and What’s New Pussycat? and Close To You. Four decades of Oscar and Grammy nominations.

From two immigrants living above their deli in NYC.

100.8 fever.

That’s 100.8 degrees higher than the “feels like” outside.

Today is not fun.

Had a nice little #EgoBoost the other day and just wanted to share that with the world:

Every fall for the last 4 years I've done a series of guest lectures (automation and AI) at the local university, for future teachers of technology.

The other day, the senior lecturer of that department wanted to meet up. Which is a little weird, since as long as everything works as expected and the students seem happy they just leave you alone...
