Lovely obituary for Steve Silberman...
He wrote about the developmental condition in “NeuroTribes,” a 2015 bestseller that promoted understanding and acceptance of people who think differently. washingtonpost.com/obituaries/…

Today I’m toying with the DJI Neo.
There’s never been a cheaper, easier-to-use DJI drone than the $200 Neo for self-flying selfies.
But I’m so torn. The foldable $350 HoverAir X1 seems better for my social video needs. It filmed my opening shot below! But I love soaring with FPV goggles, which Hover can’t do. Maybe I’ll wait and see if DJI sells a budget FPV bundle.
Book 34: Gevangenis met een open deur, by Jan Terlouw.
Very good YA book about a cult, and how easily some people are sucked into it. Written in 1986, but still quite relevant when you think how disinformation influences people's views.

Tomorrow we will have our first meeting since the summer holidays.
We are excited to make new plans to push for FOSS in the digital worlds we inhabit.
Because while the need to take back control over our digital lives increases every year, many of our fellow colleagues and fellow students are still (kept) unaware of the urgency.
Hello #fedifriends, I've just realized that #asciidoc & #asciidoctor aren't the same thing, so I was using the documentation of asciidoctor and processing the my document with asciidoc… 🤦♂️
I don't know who came late, but the choice of the name is very confused, so now I'd like to know what the #fediversians like to use if asciidoc or asciidoctor, or at least you recommend.
The point is some stuff aren't working because perhaps aren't for ascidoc on the other end asciidoctor is very aggressive on the web search, so unless you don't exclude it from the search it completely eclipses the other one.
Thanks! 🙏

This is a mixed bunch of birds on the beach at Gulfport, Mississippi in the fall. The birds are a mix of laughing gulls (Leucophaeus atricilla) and black skimmers (Rynchops niger). Notice that many of the birds have their head turned backwards and their bills tucked beneath their wings. The bill is an extremity, and they tuck them beneath their wings to warm them, like we might put our fingers beneath our arm pits to warm them on a cold day.

in reply to 洪 民憙 (Hong Minhee) • • •i'm pretty excited for fedify since i'm unsure if there has been any other activitypub abstraction that feels as comprehensive as it seems right now (from a brief skim, anyway).
one thing i had in mind ever since i first skimmed the docs some time ago is this:
i would really recommend you to NOT tell people to use handles here. i assume this is just naming and the framework doesn't actually require a handle there, but documentation matters and if you follow on the footsteps of mastodon, pleroma, lemmy, and friends everyone who follows your docs will lose the ability to change usernames down the line without more pain than it's worth (and yes, there are software out there that allow it right now! please do not build fedi software assuming usernames are immutable jsut because mastodon doesn't let people do it)
just like how you wouldn't use a natural key in a database, you should tell people to use a surrogate key like an autoincrement

just like how you wouldn't use a natural key in a database, you should tell people to use a surrogate key like an autoincrement id or a uuid on the actor IDs, as they're effectively permanent. while it may be probably fine for a quickstart thing like this to omit that, a lot of permanent codebases do start up by following these kinds of guides, and nudging people to do the correct thing when it's not that hard is always a good idea IMO

in reply to 洪 民憙 (Hong Minhee) • • •In the next version of #Fedify, it will allow you to decouple actor URIs from WebFinger usernames with the
mapHandle()method. For example, you can use UUIDs for actor URIs but let users use their own username of choice for their fediverse handle. You can preview it in v0.15.0-dev.382+a8a9b73b: JSR & npm.
