Reflecting on last week's report from the British Social Attitudes survey that identified a decline in pride in British history.... Kenan Malik concludes:
'It is not so much the fall in pride in British history about which we should worry as the insistence that there is only one way to understand the nation’s past or the meaning of Britishness today'!
Exactly right: part of being multicultural (which we are) is to also accept there are different histories!

Jake Tapper, the prominent CNN journalist, lied yesterday on X. Pro-Palestinian protesters had confronted his CNN colleague Dana Bash at a literary event in Washington, D.C., and he told his 3 million followers that they had “targeted” her because she is “Jewish.”
Tapper’s tweet included a 2 minute and 14 second video of two women protesters who, one after the other, jumped up and yelled at Bash.

Four Palestinians were killed and 20 others injured on Saturday in an Israeli air strike targeting the Amr Ibn Al-As School, which shelters displaced Palestinians in the Sheikh Radwan neighborhood in the northern Gaza City.
Eyewitnesses reported that Israeli warplanes targeted a prayer area inside the school, which shelters thousands of displaced Palestinians.

The killing of a Turkish-American activist in the West Bank by Israel during a peaceful protest is a "terrible atrocity" that is continuing to go on, according to a former British MP, who said Israel is "out of control."
"The total annihilation of the Palestinian people, the killing of activists and journalists without remorse from Israel, it's an atrocious reality that we're all facing," Claudia Webbe told Anadolu.

Not allowing workers to take up their statuary paid holiday is wage theft by employers.... its just one more area where having laws is all very well, but if they are not properly enforced then only the powerful and/or well-supported (via unions) can gain the benefits.
Yet one more example of the inequality & exploitation of the lowe(er) paid that patterns the British economy.

Despite the shift in the media’s attention to regional developments and the Israeli invasion of the northern West Bank, the massacres in Gaza continue in silence.
In the first three days of September, Israel committed nine massacres in the strip.
The massacres usually result from airstrikes on displacement centers. Most of the time, they are schools that have been converted into shelters.

Illegal Israeli settlers demolished 47 agricultural structures and homes last week in the Taybe area in the west of Hebron in the southern West Bank, Palestinians reported on Saturday.
The destruction was discovered by the Palestinians upon their return to their properties after being barred from accessing them by Israeli forces since early September, following a shooting incident that killed three police officers.

For once I was a bit disappointed in the normally quite brilliant analysis of Kenan Malik. While there is in some ways cause to be proud of some aspects of British history and ashamed of others, it is also necessary to understand that these aspects are often two sides of the same coin.
British achievements in the arts, especially literature, and the sciences, were often made possible by the leisure of some British people produced by the exploitation of others - especially enslaved and colonised peoples.
Even the actual content is often one side of a historical coin that has a darker other. We revere Shakespeare, for example, for his exploration of complex personalities - but this is actually a reflection of the transition he was living through, from a feudal, medieval world-view to a modern, capitalist one, from 'characters'

Even the actual content is often one side of a historical coin that has a darker other. We revere Shakespeare, for example, for his exploration of complex personalities - but this is actually a reflection of the transition he was living through, from a feudal, medieval world-view to a modern, capitalist one, from 'characters' like 'Everyman' in medieval drama to the more individualistic capitalist conception of what people are. (Nor, of course, did 'Britain' exist at all in Shakespeare's times.)
Dickens is also well-known for his colourful characters - but there are no black people in Dickens' London, even though they are very present there in the novels of his contemporary, Thackeray. That doesn't make Dickens bad and Tharckeray good - it makes them both complicated.
