If seeing is believing. Linux Mint is not secure or safe. #Linux #Mint #MintLinux #LinuxMint #Windows #Security

In this video, I quickly created oz3, logged out, and the 1st thing I do after switching users is run, "sudo apt update" without any password.

Note: Video will be DELETED in a few hours. I am not going to keep it up forever.

in reply to Linux Is Best

This is weird. I don't follow exactly how you're getting it to do that--just the ins and outs--but yeah, seems like kind of a giant security hole.
in reply to Orion Ussner kidder

Step 1) Install Mint Linux

Step 2) Using the GUI tool, update Mint

Step 3) Reboot

Step 4) Create new admin (as done in the video)

Step 5) Log out and log in as new user

Step 6) Delete original admin

Step 7) You're basically sudo forever now.

That's how I discovered this.

I have played a little bit with OpenAI's new iteration of #GPT, GPT-o1, which performs an initial reasoning step before running the LLM. It is certainly a more capable tool than previous iterations, though still struggling with the most advanced research mathematical tasks.

Here are some concrete experiments (with a prototype version of the model that I was granted access to). In chatgpt.com/share/2ecd7b73-360… I repeated an experiment from mathstodon.xyz/@tao/1099482491… in which I asked GPT to answer a vaguely worded mathematical query which could be solved by identifying a suitable theorem (Cramer's theorem) from the literature. Previously, GPT was able to mention some relevant concepts but the details were hallucinated nonsense. This time around, Cramer's theorem was identified and a perfectly satisfactory answer was given. I've discovered who spoke the line "what were the skies like when you were young?" in the song Little Fluffy Clouds by the Orb. It's not LeVar Burton like many people think. polpo.org/blog/who-asked-what-…

🧵 #JDVance is even more dishonest than Donald Trump. The old guy lies constantly, but often he can't tell the difference between fantasy and reality. He regularly thinks he's in some other state.

Vance is a calculating deceiver who has twice admitted that he lied for political advantage.

Speaking to CNN today, Vance said that he and Trump "create stories" which are untrue, like the lies about Haitians in Springfield.

in reply to Matthew Sheffield

This was not a slip of the tongue by Vance. 4 days ago also on CNN, he said almost the exact same thing.

Twice now, the second-highest ranking Republican has admitted to fabricating a news story for propaganda purposes.

If these flagrantly racist lies are things he admits to telling in public, what kind of lies does he keep secret?

in reply to Matthew Sheffield

As anyone who actually read his memoir can tell you, Vance has been personally at war with everyone else for his whole life. He constantly trashes others for their supposed laziness and lack of discipline.

Along his way, he's met other people like Peter Thiel, Amy Chua, Catholic integralists, and Donald Trump who found him a kindred spirit.

They handed him everything. And it's only made him hate more. And lie more.

Linux 6.11 released

Linus has released the 6.11 kernel. ""I'm once again on the road and not in my normal timezone, but it's Sunday afternoon here in Vienna, and 6.11 is out."" Significant changes in this release include new io_uring operations for bind() and listen(), the nested bottom-half locking patches, the ability to write to busy executable files, support for writing block drivers in Rust, support for atomic write operations in the block layer, the dedicated bucket slab allocator, the vDSO implementation of getrandom(), and more. See the LWN merge-window summaries (part 1, part 2) for more information.

The answer seems to be yes but I have not seen much detail on what works now and what does not. It also seems that device trees are required for each device and I have only seen that for one ASUS and one Lenevo so far.

If anybody knows more, I would love an update.

Just a reminder that the Auschwitz Memorial fedi account is for following & reflecting. Not harrassing.

There is no need to reply to it ever. This is coming from someone becoming increasingly #AntiZionist because of Netanyanhu's regime's atrocities in #Gaza and the #WestBank.

@auschwitzmuseum

Never again means never again. To any group of people.

Follow? Yes
Reflect? Also yes.
Boost? Maybe
Reply? Nope.

@paninid My rule has always been to repost any post where the person dies so that more can remember them and mourn their loss, and to favorite any person who survived to celebrate their good luck.

After many years of following @auschwitzmuseum, here and on Twitter, I’ve scrolled across exactly two survivor posts.

There are so many posts.

So many.

A lot of posts.

Too many.

Two survivor posts, that I’ve personally seen.

The rest harden my anti-fascist resolve.

Funny, but it just doesn’t seem to happen to people who don’t cut the heads off whales or commit insurrections.

This weekend, Running Down the Walls events are taking place in a dozen cities across North America, with prisoners also participating on the inside. The events will bring together hundreds to raise awareness + funds for political prisoners. Check out our list here:
