Scientists may have discovered a new extinct form of life phys.org/news/2026-01-scientis…

Prototaxites fossils are structurally and chemically distinct from extinct and extant Fungi science.org/doi/10.1126/sciadv…

"#Prototaxites was the 1st giant organism on the terrestrial surface, represented by #fossils of up to 8m from the #Devonian... fossils of P. taiti were chemically distinct from contemporaneous #Fungi, structurally distinct from all known Fungi. This casts doubt upon its fungal affinity"

Fossil dating back 410 million years joins museum collection.
A 410-million-year-old fossil of a giant prehistoric organism which once loomed over north-east Scotland has been added to the collections of National Museums Scotland (NMS).
The example of Prototaxites was discovered in a sedimentary deposit near the village of Rhynie in Aberdeenshire.

Prototaxites

"About 400 million years ago—long before the first giant dinosaurs—a massive and strange organism up to 8 meters long loomed over the Lilliputian plants, mushrooms, and bugs that carpeted the land"

Not a fungus. Not a lichen. Not a plant ...

An unknown branch of multicellular life that went extinct

Fossils of sea lilies can be found in rivers in England, and they were once believed to be fairy coins. They are also called "star stones" and are said to bring victory over enemies.

Oh my, what a treat. “TipOfDay. I was gifted a “medicine ball” tea from Starbucks last weekend and really enjoyed it. Reminded me of the old “waitress remedy” for a sore throat and cold when you still have to work. I avoid Starbucks and just won’t pay the high expense for coffees there. I got 3, 20 oz hot tea drinks from the one tall paper cup because they left 2 teabags in it. Perfect for someone with fierce bronchitis.

Worked most of the day on opening dusty and dirty boxes of rocks and crystals (see posts yesterday) and all that dust in the air, whoa. Kinda made my congestion and coughing worse. So I found a copycat recipe online and winged it. Bingo! 1 bag green tea, 1 peppermint tea and 1 peach flavor tea. Added lemon juice and raw honey. It works! #Tea #MedicineBall #Bronchitis #Fossils #Nacre #Flint #Display

Oh how funny, I couldn’t figure out where I left my glasses. Now I’ve found them as I looked at the cabinet photo. #Rocks #Crystals #Minerals #Fossils

I have so much _________ to go thru but my new display cases are coming along. I haven’t seen some of the pieces for years.

We had a great first fossil sorting session of 2026! Some really incredibly preserved teeth and fish bits this time.

If you're sad that you missed your chance, no worries! We have three more sessions before the summer:
Sunday, Feb.8
Sunday, Feb. 22
Sunday, March 8

Everyone is welcome! If you're in the Calgary area, why not give it a try?

See albertapaleo.org/events/fossil… for more information.

Prehistoric Sea Monster Didn't Stick to The Oceans, Suggests Fossil Study.

#Mosasaurs were the apex predators of the oceans during the reign of the dinosaurs, but new research reveals dinosaurs weren't safe from them in rivers either.

Researchers from Sweden, the US, and the Netherlands analyzed isotopes in several mosasaur teeth from sites across North Dakota, confirming that these ancient sea monsters could also live in freshwater environments.

This 70-Million-Year-Old Dinosaur Egg Contained a Sparkling Crystal Surprise.

A grapefruit-sized dinosaur egg from a fossil bed in China gave paleontologists a huge surprise. Rather than a dinosaur embryo or sediment, it was filled with sparkling crystals of calcite lining the inner shell – a natural dinosaur geode

A fossil forest near Verdeña, Castile and León: videos.trom.tf/w/cEAj926jd21e1…

Miserable cold and rainy weather, but still worth the nice little hike to see the imprints of 250 million-year-old trees 😊

We found a fossil forest

San Salvador de Cantamuda: We found a fossil forest and the weather was cold and rainy. Nothing very eventful. Just a few more days of our motorhome adventures. But super cool to see these imprints that are many millions of years old. A book of earth :)

This week's Fossil Friday features a beautifully preserved bird track from Grande Cache, Alberta. This track is from the Albian (Lower Cretaceous) Gates Formation, near Grande Cache, and is about 110 million years old. This track is just one of many hundreds exposed by strip-mining coal in the region.

This fossil was found during our 2024 field trip to Grande Prairie and Grande Cache!

This week’s Fossil Friday features a dicot leaf preserved in Paskapoo Formation sandstone (roughly 50 million years old), discovered in a Calgary neighbourhood.

Paskapoo sandstone is a common decorative rock across the city, and it often contains plant and bivalve fossils. Next time you see one of these distinctive stones, take a closer look - you might find a fossil!
