The river was an open sewer when it was covered. (And had been a sewer as long as the city has been here).
Better waste handling made it possible to re-open it without stinking up the city centre.
It is really nice now.
(There were also plans to tear down the old part of town and run a highway through it.)
Precisely matched photos are good, especially for people who haven't seem the Before and After in real life.
Actually in my thread, the current photos are my own photos I happened to have in my phone already and then I used some 'non-commercial-use with a credit' photos I was able to find reasonably quickly in the city archive. I hope they give the general idea.
