Solved: the mystery of how Victorians built Crystal Palace in just 190 days - theguardian.com/artanddesign/2… modularity is also one of the reasons why #OpenSource has been such a success

@abuseofnotation It depends on what you're looking for. It's a surprising result, and most people go "Wow! How could I know that!", and that provides an opportunity to say that knowing the math gives you the answer, and being comfortable with the math can sometimes stop you from being deceived.

It's not advanced math, it's not calculus or Graph Theory or Topology, but it is simple math that people will have seen and probably dismissed as irrelevant.

And yet here it is, sitting in front of you.

Math isn't about formulas, calculations, equations ... it's about patterns, structure, and relationships. At its most superficial this question really is just about 2π𝑟 , but it's really about getting people to think quantitatively, and help them see that math sometimes wins over "gut reactions".

@ColinTheMathmo Yes, but here the surprising part isn't mathematical, it's an optical illusion, you can call it. Otherwise, I agree that we concentrate too much on the complex rather than the simple.

Kids who start to learn programming should get to know the concept of #freesoftware and its big opportunities.

These aspects are dealt with in the book „Ada & Zangemann“ (FSFE/O’Reilly).

Now the Free Software Foundation Europe has initiated a project to bring the story of this children’s book to life in an animated movie:

fsfe.org/news/2024/news-202405…

Sure we are project sponsors, as all software that we develop or maintain for our customers is published as #freesoftware.

Thank you so much for your support for the movie, and in general for over a decade of support for the @fsfe ! This is highly appreciated!

Federal government ties itself to US corporations with large funds

The federal government is spending heavily on digital administration. But not for transparent software – but for Microsoft & Co, comments Kornelius Kindermann.

French European Commissioner Thierry Breton resigns, attacks von der Leyen for ‘questionable governance’ - politico.eu/article/frances-co… never a dull moment these days... #eu

‘Data centre emissions likely 662% higher than big tech claims. Can it keep up the ruse?’

But never mind. Once we’ve shifted the rest of our reality into the cloud, we won’t be needing the real world, will we. Will we?

Commissioner Thierry #Breton has resigned from the @EUCommission and will not run again. Sounds like he is pretty pissed.

I am very curious to see where that will leave #DSA and #DMA enforcement. 😬

in reply to Aral Balkan

@aral It's a tough question, Breton has indeed been a mixed bag:

He has pushed for competitiveness over competition (e.g. in telcos) and digital sovereignty for him mostly seemed to mean building a European Google.

But on the positive side, he has also supported swift enforcement of the DSA & DMA and has never seemed scared by the powers one faces when taking on big tech firms.

in reply to Jan Penfrat

Hmm, based on that, I wonder how much of it was him protecting the interests of EU Telcos against those of Silicon Valley Big Tech.

I mean, I already have very low expectations when it comes to the EU Commission :)

i find People Also Ask to be an absolutely fascinating window into the minds of Normal™ people
i was literally just searching splatfest news

Yeah, it's very strange
Though I'm never sure these days if these truly are things people also ask and/or to what extent the search engines or llms mess with the content and frequencies.

what does Elon Musk do while his companies take on Government contracts?

He tweets dangerous, irresponsible, idiotic and incendiary suggestions that assassination attempts on Donald Trump are orchestrated by the President and Vice President of the United States.

Make no mistake, that’s what Musk is suggesting.

On my way to football with Emily yesterday we saw this graffiti in the city centre. A reminder of how dangerous transphobia is to our children, to never forget Brianna and how lucky I am to have my daughter happy, healthy and thriving. #transkidsdeservetothrive

Bluesky adds 8 million users in last ten months.

After attracting 2 million users in its first year of operation, Bluesky has grown another 400 percent with some recent help from Brazil and Elon Musk. Are these monthly or daily users, or just account holders? Nobody knows! But it still has a way to go to match X’s estimated 250 million daily users and Threads’ 175 million monthly users.
