One of my favorite #Mastodon features: temporary muting. Useful, e.g., when someone posts a lot about an event you are not interested in. (And I’m not judging: That someone is also me, occasionally.)

Related favourite #Mastodon feature: disabling boosts by a specific account.

Sometimes someone's regular posting is super interesting, but their boosting is overloading my timeline.

Nature is coming for America - UnHerd

#politics #society #environment #climate

The inference of this cautionary tale is perhaps that we’re all only as radically independent as technological buffers against the elements (and bears) make us. Radical individualism, ironically, works best in a context already pre-cleansed of the kind of material threats that require human cooperation and ingenuity to overcome.

I think I just vaulted over the line between "WordPress is too much of a maintenance burden, I want to move away" to "I need to stop using WordPress. Now."

@devlord ok, i don't think i need that. one reason i rejected it was it did seem like it was increasing the number of remote services i was receiving from automattic, and i didn't feel comfortable with that. good call me apparently lol
in reply to Don Marti

@dmarti @james_inthe_box my only nonstandard plugin was one i wrote 12 years ago that stopped working somewhere around 4 years ago. so maybe if i switch to classic port it will like… automatically reverse port me. like maybe my custom plugin will just start working again

Everybody is talking about packing the Supreme Court, but what about also regulating it, as the Constitution provides? Senator Ron Wyden has a solution…

The new material largely affirms prior reporting by ProPublica, The Texas Tribune and FRONTLINE detailing law enforcement’s failures to engage the teen shooter who killed 19 children and two teachers in 2022.

The causes. Focus on the causes. I especially like Woodrow Wilson on the topic. @ProPublica

turns out that “good guys with guns” aren’t actually a thing stopping “bad guys with guns” at all, after all. Surprise!

It’s very hard to fix a society when it reaches a state of being so utterly broken.

Trump didn’t send Putin COVID tests.

Trump sent Putin Abbott test MACHINES!

This, while Americans:

- Lacked adequate testing
- Had no vaccine
- Faced a crumbling healthcare infrastructure
- Watched as the Trump administration intercepted state-purchased COVID care

At best, he's guilty of negligent homicide. But more accurately:

TRUMP

IS

A

TRAITOR.

It’s time for real consequences!

I think it’s important that this be shared as widely as possible so that, in the future it will be harder to say, as so many did post-Holocaust, “but we didn’t know”.

I agree that the information in the article is important and should be as widely available as possible.

Unfortunately, the NY Times paywall is preventing this. Here's a link that does a reasonable job in removing that restriction and making the article available to anyone, anywhere, with a web browser.

#PostOfTheWeek (season 1):
I worked as a trauma surgeon in Gaza from March 25 to April 8. I’ve volunteered in Ukraine and Haiti, and I grew up in Flint, Mich. I’ve seen violence and worked in conflict zones. But of the many things that stood out about working in a hospital in Gaza, one got to me: Nearly every day I was there, I saw a new young child who had been shot in the head or the chest, virtually all of whom went on to die. Thirteen in total.
