Today in Labor History October 27, 2006: U.S. anarchist activist and journalist, Brad Will, was murdered by a government-affiliated paramilitary while covering the teachers’ strike in Oaxaca, Mexico. He was affiliated with Indymedia. In the 1990s, he worked as a teaching assistant to Peter Lamborn Wilson (a.k.a. Hakim Bey). He later moved to a squat in New York’s Lower East Side. He once participated in a protest against a proposed amendment to the Colorado constitution that sought to curtail gay rights, by pretending to marry another man, dressed in drag, with a parade in front of a Promise Keepers event in Boulder, Colorado. He was also active in Earth First, pirate radio, and other causes.

Today is World Teachers' Day. 4 facts (UNESCO):
1. The world needs 44 million more teachers by 2030.
2. 15 million of them in sub-Saharan Africa alone.
3. The share of primary teachers quitting each year nearly doubled, from 4.6% in 2015 to 9.1% in 2022.
4. The day marks October 5, 1966, when a Paris conference adopted the recommendation on teachers' rights.

Somebody taught you what you do for a living. Tell them.

Teachers by Iain Crichton Smith I have met old teachers in strange places. Some have had strokes, some play the violin in a quiet little heaven of their own. And some are standing on the banks of Hades with books about Julius Caesar in their hands, English grammar, absolute ablative. Sometimes a huge wind blows them away, the leaves of autumn. Sometimes in the snow wearing their gowns of chalk they are writing. I have met the old teachers in strange places and there are apples trembling in their hands.

Would you be able to put a FREE Japanese language edition of The Mathematicians' Library to good use?

I'll send it out to the first person who gives me a good reason why they should have it, and I'll even cover postage (anywhere the UK).

The Polish version went to a teacher with some students with Polish as their first language, to be added to their school's maths library (just in case you're wondering what a 'good reason' looks like).

I've also got one copy each of the German and Spanish language editions to send out under the same conditions.

PLEASE SHARE THIS to increase the risk of it landing in front of a person who might benefit from it. A 'like' is nice, but does nothing to help anyone else find it.

A Japanese edition of The Mathematicians’ Library lies on a deep magenta patterned carpet. The blue book cover features large white Japanese lettering, the English title The Mathematicians’ Library, and colourful overlapping translucent mathematical shapes forming a vivid abstract design. The author’s name, Thomas K. Briggs, and the publisher’s name appear in Japanese.

Hi, I’m David. I’m a middle school math teacher in the south. You’ll usually find me tinkering with some kind of computer problem, playing role-playing games and board games, and catching British comedy panel shows. I'm kind of an odd ball all around and I never quite fit in whatever box anyone tries to put me in. I have a pug dog that is my faithful companion, he's getting old like his dad is, we're both going grey.
