Impunity is never a good idea.
With soldiers posting their war crimes on social media it gets even worse.

This is impunity and rubbing it in.

All kids, and their parents, should see "The Ada & Zangemann Movie" -- in which a girl tinkers with technology in the face of opposition from a control freak. It's a great introduction to the value of open tech, and encourages kids to tinker.

The film is a follow-up on a terrific book, "Ada & Zangemann - A Tale of Software, Skateboards, and Raspberry Ice Cream"

My son is learning #python for his GCSE. He’s really engaged with it so far. Anyone recommend a good book that he can work through or website to keep him engaged? There’s loads when you search so I’m wondering if anyone can recommend from experience. #gcsecomputerscience

I am liking the new default desktop wallpaper for KDE Plasma 6.2.

Or at least, this is what it changed on Arch Linux (I never picked a wallpaper and have been using the default this whole time).

@pfefferle According to BrowserPub my blog has a few posts in the outbox that haven't made it to @colin - Anything I can do?

browser.pub/cdevroe.com/@colin

in reply to Colin Devroe

what do you mean by "a few"?

mastodon does not support importing of old posts and the plugin does not send posts that where posted before the first person followed your blog.

in reply to Matthias Pfefferle

The last few posts never made it to Mastodon. And I'm not sure why. I'm just not sure how to debug the setup to make sure everything is correct.
in reply to Colin Devroe

maybe you have to re-check your ActivityPub settings, if author and blog profiles are enabled!?!
in reply to Matthias Pfefferle

@cdevroe@cdevroe.com I see. My goal is to have @colin be MY account. But, if I turn my author profile off it doesn't post as me. So I have to keep both on. But I don't want @cdevroe@cdevroe.com to exist.

By the way, if I'm asking these questions in the wrong spot, please let me know. I don't want to bother you.

in reply to Colin Devroe

@cdevroe@cdevroe.com if you deactivate the author and only have the blog-author enabled, the plugin should post from this account then!
in reply to Matthias Pfefferle

@cdevroe@cdevroe.com
I can confirm that if I have the blog profile on, but ActivityPub off for a specific user, the blog profile does not post. :(

Should I file this as a bug? I'm not sure that it is a bug though. I don't know what people's expectation would be in this circumstance. My guess is that they would expect it to work the way it is working now.

in reply to Matthias Pfefferle

@cdevroe@cdevroe.com

No urgency here. I suppose I can enable ActivityPub for my author profile for now. Perhaps in the future there can be a way to pull this off.

Oh, while I have you, do know if there is a way to retroactively _delete_ a profile on ActivityPub? I realize each instance would need to know. But say I wanted to delete @cdevroe@cdevroe.com ?

in reply to Colin Devroe

@cdevroe@cdevroe.com Ahhh! now I understand your problem! this is in case a special case that is not supported yet!

thanks for filing the issue, I will think about how to properly fall back to the blog author in this case!

The idea that only authorized government agencies would ever use backdoor channels for getting user data was always risky and flawed. eff.org/deeplinks/2024/10/salt…
in reply to Electronic Frontier Foundation

It should have been assumed that this would happen. Presumably, this backdoor is documented and available to all purchasers of the hardware/software.

Scientists have said that we can cool the #planet back down. Now they’re not so sure.

It might be possible to “overshoot” & then return to our #climate targets. But some changes will be irreversible.

For years, scientists & world leaders have pinned their hopes for the future on a hazy promise — that, even if temperatures soar far above global targets, the planet can eventually be cooled back down.

But a new study published Wed in the journal #Nature shows that blowing past #climate goals is more dangerous than it originally seemed. Even if temperatures come back down to 1.5°C, the authors found, many climate impacts — like rising #SeaLevels & thawing #permafrost — will persist for centuries to millennia.

For example, for every 10 yrs #Earth’s temperature remains 1.5°C above preindustrial levels, the researchers calculated, sea level will rise by about 4 cm, or 1.6”. Even a small increase in #SeaLevelRise can lead to more dangerous #flooding when #hurricanes & heavy #rains strike. (In #Florida, which is currently facing the danger of Hurricane #Milton, #SeaLevels are already 8” higher than they were in 1950.)

‘Barbaric attack’: Armed settlers assault Palestinians on first day of olive harvest

in reply to technocrit

Obviously I do not want to detract from the horror being inflicted on the Palestinian people but part of that horror is the destruction of their olive orchards. Those things take DECADES to mature to the point of producing. Every time they kill an olive tree they are wiping out decades of Palestinian labor caring for and tending to these orchards.
in reply to technocrit

Fuck Israel. Genocidal fucks.

The situation in Jabalia camp, northern Gaza is catastrophic.
The camp is surrounded by Israeli tanks, people are under siege and are running out of food and water. Anyone attempting to flee is shot. Hospitals have been ordered to evacuate. Journalists are targeted.
Bodies are in the streets that people cannot reach.

The video shows the aftermath of an Israeli strike today on a camp for the displaced near Yemen Al Saeed hospital - reports of 17 killed including children.
