The Nobel Prize going (partly) to deep learning unfortunately reminds me of this Onion video youtube.com/watch?v=-Uq9pp586A…
in reply to Alex Holcombe

by itself, deep learning is fine and super-useful. But what people are building on top of it will be bad (but often good).

Hurricane Milton hits tonight, and it’s past the point of evacuation. Creators are still there.

We might not hear from them for a while if Milton knocks out power and communicates like Hurricane Helene did. “Life-threatening” hurricane-force winds and flash floods are on the way, the National Hurricane Center warns.

Saudi Arabia executes 213 people in less than 10 months, setting new record

in reply to Linkerbaan

Eh, question... what's their charges? Murder? Treason?

The official human rights authority in the kingdom, the Saudi Human Rights Commission, also falsely claimed that child defendant Mustafa al-Darwish, who was sentenced to death for protest-related offences, was over 19 at the time of the crimes.

But Reprieve and ESOHR provided evidence that proved he was in fact under 18. Darwish was executed on 15 June 2021 despite the evidence.

Would it be too much to ask various #Mozilla #Firefox forks: #palemoon #waterfox #LibreWolf #iceweasel etc to join forces and chart an independent path, not just for catching up in #browser tech, but actually developing it in the right direction?

Jure Repinc reshared this.

in reply to nilesh

hmm I thought Palemoon was forked from an old FF a long ago and atm they do not follow Mozilla's development cycle at all but rather progressing independently (unlike Waterfox/Librewolf) 🤔

I think you're right, but they forked Chrome instead, so it's a modified version of the Gecko engine. So unfortunately that also breaks add-on support:(

I totally agree with the OP that this energy would be better spent by joining forces with other projects.

A Tribute #ForTinu: Honoring Her Legacy

How do you write a memorial for a friend who touched countless lives and left an indelible mark on the world and on you personally? As I began to reflect on Tinu’s legacy, it was through many tears, breaks, and profound gratitude. Writing this feels surreal and difficult because it makes the loss real. My dear Tinu, I hope my words do you justice as to how much you meant to me, your family, your friends, and our community.

Administration Confirms Fight Between Haverhill High Students, but Calls Related Rumors Untrue

Rumors surrounding a fight between students at Haverhill High School near the end of the school day Wednesday appear to be largely exaggerations. Haverhill school Superintendent Margaret Marotta confirmed for WHAV that a fight did take place, but reports of weapons were said to be unfounded.

"I can not say this loud enough: If water exits Tampa Bay as we saw with Ian and Irma, do not, I repeat, *do not* go into or near the bay to gawk. This one is coming in much closer to Tampa and it’s possible a wall of water comes rushing back in at some point. You will be trapped."

Chopin and His World by Jonathan D. Bellman & Halina Goldberg, 2017

A new look at the life, times, and music of Polish composer and piano virtuoso Fryderyk ChopinFryderyk Chopin (1810–49), although the most beloved of piano composers, remains a contradictory figure, an artist of virtually universal appeal who preferred the company of only a few sympathetic friends and listeners.
