But then if you call section-8 housing a "Vote Plantation", they get all offended...
in reply to Caleb James DeLisle

If democracy is going to work ever, it will be through formalizing the vote-buying.

That is, you vote with your tax payment. This requires a flat tax of course.

Still won't work because most people are delusional, but less dysfunctional than contemporary system.

in reply to ≠ PHYSICAL REMOVAL WILL BE REQUIRED ≠

I would strike the "D-word" because it's loaded and symbolic at this point. Objective is a stable government that creates a country you'd want to live in...

I was thinking about a flat tax. Something like 10k/year, if you pay it, you get 1 vote. If you don't pay it then you don't. Paying 20k does not get you 2 votes, you need 20k and 2 warm bodies for that.

Israel subjects northern Gaza to one of the most violent campaigns of its genocide

08 Oct 2024 - Israeli occupation forces have intensified their siege of the Jabalia camp and the surrounding neighborhoods, including Tal al-Zaatar, al-Sikka, Beit Hanoun, and Beit Lahia. The Israeli forces have also taken up positions in the western region of the Gaza Strip, advancing as far as the Jaffa Cemetery and the Tawam Junction.

With airstrikes, fire belts, and artillery shelling—including bombing homes over the heads of their occupants—the Israeli occupation forces have been occupying large portions of northern Gaza since Saturday evening, 5 October. Dozens of people have been killed and injured as a result of this ongoing invasion.

Initial reports confirmed that five citizens—including a woman, a man, and his son—were executed by the occupation forces for trying to escape the Jabalia camp while waving white flags.

in reply to Berin

What are the police gonna do? Arrest them? Shoot them?
in reply to StarkRG

@StarkRG the article doesn't say 🤷‍♀️ only that they rescued the woman

Reminder: 34 years ago the first #IPCC report assessed it as “certain” that increasing greenhouse gases would cause #globalwarming.

Tragically, even today many prefer the disinformation peddled by oil companies & billionaire media moguls (Murdoch’s Fox News etc) to scientific evidence.

If you are confused as to why Trump is doing a rally at MSG… this is about CONGRESS.

There are 7 competitive house races in New York, that will likely determine who gets the majority. Trump needs Rs in control of the House in case he wants to contest electors.

If that scares you (it should), then help us win these races. www.battlegroundny.com

New word

How to avoid sanewashing and making Trump sound normal

There’s been a lot of chatter about how the press makes Trump sound more coherent and normal

The clever word to describe this: #Sanewashing.

Like greenwashing (taking superficial actions in the name of helping the environment), or sportswashing (using sporting events to burnish one’s reputation and gloss over corruption or human rights abuses), sanewashing is the act of packaging radical and outrageous statements in a way that makes them seem normal.

Critics accuse many in journalism of doing just that.

so, people with #homelab

do you regret getting into it? sinking all the money and time into the thing? did it worth it in the end?

#askingforafriend

in reply to Kai, sounds like the sky

I only regret it when something stops working unexpectedly and my wife notices it before I've been able to fix it....

in reply to Didier

I don't regret it! The only thing I'm not hosting at home is my mail server. That is still on a VPS. But other than that - everything is at home and #selfhosted !

Hey #Linux and #security people! I have a daemon process which sometimes has to fork off a child process to do some work. This child process does not need a lot of permissions, and it has a pretty large attack surface, so I want to run it as a very restricted user.

This would be trivial if the daemon was running as root, it could just fork and then change its user. But I obviously don't want to run the daemon as root. What's the best way to drop from a non-root user to a less privileged user?

Capitalism makes everything better. And by better, I mean worse.
in reply to Aral Balkan

I feel this way, but I still can't think of a better alternative. Do you have examples, or is it a mismatch in our definitions?
