Happy solstice! At 09:20 UTC today the Sun reached the southernmost point in its annual latitudinal motion. From now on the amount of daylight in the northern hemisphere will increase until the June solstice.
in reply to Phil Plait

it may also be interesting to point out that even while the daylight hours were still decreasing until 09:20 UTC, sunsets have been getting later in the Northern Hemisphere for about a week; while they were already starting the "grand stretch" as we say here in Ireland the sunrises were still happening later, fast enough to still cause an overall decrease in daylight hours. Until now. Happy #solstice.

This USB-C cable can rotate 360 degrees for optimal cable management

The image shows a workspace scene with a laptop computer connected to a power adapter via a cable. In the foreground is a power strip with multiple outlets, a white power adapter, and a laptop. The background includes a gray wall, hinting at a modern, minimalist workspace. The overall setting suggests a home office or a clean, organized work area. The cable shows a 90-degree bend where it protrudes from the laptop's socket.
USB-C was a great step forward, removing the awkward “try to plug in the cable, doesn’t fit, rotate 180 degrees, still doesn’t fit” dance, but cable management is still a pain. If you wish your cables didn’t stick out at awkward angles and could rotate to fit your needs best, one Japanese company has your back—with a catch.

So whilst it will deliver 240W of charging power, actual data transfer rates are stuck at USB 2.0 rates. I can see that data throughput is going to be more sensitive than power delivery. And right now it is only available from their website.

Still, let’s hope this idea takes off and improvements can be made.

USB cables have started to scare me a bit than I'm willing to admit ...

Considering the small factor and low price for DIY stuff, there are few limits to what more professional actors can achieve ...

USB, Lightning and Thunderbolt cables have given us smart cables .... It's quite a viable attack vector.

“try to plug in the cable, doesn’t fit, rotate 180 degrees, still doesn’t fit”

The dance usually was:

Plug in the cable; it doesn't fit.
Rotate 180 degrees; it doesn't fit.
Rotate another 180 degrees; it fits!

:-D

Springtime Goldfinch

This is an American Goldfinch (Spinus tristis).

"This handsome little finch, the state bird of New Jersey, Iowa, and Washington, is welcome and common at feeders, where it takes primarily sunflower and nyjer. Goldfinches often flock with Pine Siskins and Common Redpolls. Spring males are brilliant yellow and shiny black with a bit of white. Females and all winter birds are more dull but identifiable by their conical bill; pointed, notched tail; wingbars; and lack of streaking. During molts they look bizarrely patchy." - allaboutbirds.org

My photo gallery contains more that 1000 images that I've chosen to share. Most are there for their visual appeal but there are a few novelty images. You can check out my gallery at:

In our appeal

we call on universities to #eXit and become active on #Mastodon.
We are currently seeing that some are indeed leaving X, but are going to #Bluesky. We do not consider this to be a sustainable solution, as we expect Bluesky to develop in a similar way to Xitter. Our experiences clearly show that true social media only exist if they are operated under the control of the users, like the services in the #Fediverse.
Nevertheless, we want to address and convince people who have not yet taken this step. The OSCM has recently set up a good approach to this by bridging its Mastodon channel to Bluesky:

Dear @oscmaastricht, that looks interesting. Can you give those interested here in the Fediverse a detailed technical guide on how to build this bridge? Thank you. #unis4mastodon 🐘

A single defection is almost impossible and short lived considering how the whole goo machine and vigilante extensions attack any objections. We're seeing how ugly it is getting with the Hagseth nomination or how much Romney is spending for protection.
Larger groups are more likely as we've seen in the CR votes yesterday.
in reply to Indivisible ❌👑

so I understand the sentiment, but unity at allcosts, not criticizing the Democrats for some policies that are not acceptable to most supporters, allowing them to veer more and more to the right in order to supposedly get votes from people who weren't all the way into Trump, that just hasn't worked for us.

Let's just come up with good legislation, understand the needs of Americans, and not just play political maneuvering games.

That first one is called the ‘reference mark’ (※). It is used to mark a note, much like the asterisk (*) in western typography.

en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Refere…

But I don't know why it would be placed on a facade like that. Maybe just a symbol of ‘be aware’, ‘please note’?

in reply to Head·word /ˈhedˌwɜː(ɹ)d/ n.

Or, seeing that the display window has several bags of rice, it may just be a reference to the symbol's similarity to the ‘rice’ kanji: 米 ≈ ※

This weekend's reading. The left one is a comparative study about the relocation of people around the time and especially after the collapse of the Japanese empire, the right one a monograph about education in early Meiji #Japan.
