If you want to know what's being a #Linux distribution developer feels like… imagine an unpaid volunteer middleman between an user, demanding commercial-grade support for free, and an upstream, generally believing that they are doing a better job delivering software to users and would rather not have middlemen, except that they only care about the imaginary "99% of users" and would rather get data from telemetry than deal with real people having real problems.

do you think "The JetBrains Survey" can grasp the extent of the #Python community? Are the people who are not professional software developers well represented, or is there a huge self-selection bias? There are probably millions of Python users in academia, not only research software engineers, lots of "common" people doing stats, bioinformatics, astronomy (take Jake vanderPlas before he went to Google), you name it. Was the next Travis Oliphant reached by this survey? Or take Guido's brother, Just van Rossum, making tools for type design (typograghic fonts!) in Python. I know so many journalists doing data journalism with Python. There are so many educators, like me, none of us feel this survey is for us. It seems like it is made to sell IDEs to professional software developers.

Today in Labor History December 21, 1907: The Santa María School massacre occurred in Iquique, Chile. The Chilean Army attacked striking saltpeter miners and their wives and children, killing over 2,000 and destroying the strike. It also effectively quashed the union movement for the next decade. The saltpeter strike was part of a wave of strikes that started in 1905, including a General Strike earlier in December, 1907. The event is depicted in Volodia Teitelboim’s 1952 novel, “Hijo de salitre.”

Spotify is a creepy, and grossly unethical, platform at this point. it rips off musicians and rewards huge companies -- and itself. Apparently what it's doing is legal, however.

This is great reporting, from a new book by Liz Pelly. A compelling read.

This explains what has been happening to my long-time favorite playlist "coffee beats" For at least the last 2+ years, I have listened less and less to it. I felt something was wrong with it. Many artists added to the list have no web presence, or something that looks AI generated and their songs are very generic. I checked the playlist after reading the article and it looks like this is 100% fake artists now. If any one knows a similar playlist with real music, please let me know.

If more people understand through this, good. Personally I ditched Spotify for Bandcamp years ago once I understood the exploitation, plus I stream radio and YouTube for more new music, or actually visit an artist site. To everyone who has also known about Spotify, as Yoda might’ve said, “information you had. Choices you had.” #payartists
