We reported in October that OpenAI could launch its GPT-4 successor, codenamed Orion, this month. Now, The Wall Street Journal reports the behind-schedule model’s training is a struggle that’s racking up “enormous” costs.

When it will be ready is apparently a feel thing. WSJ writes:

As suspected, Spotify is using generic stock Muzak bought from production libraries so they don’t have to pay royalties to artists.

Not surprised, since President Daniel Ek refers to music as “content” and thinks it takes little effort to create. 🙄

This is one of the ways “content” hurts the arts and severs the relationship between artists & their audience.

In a Slack channel dedicated to discussing the ethics of streaming, Spotify’s own employees debated the fairness of the PFC program. “I wonder how much these plays ‘steal’ from actual ’normal’ artists,” one employee asked. And yet as far as the public was concerned, the company had gone to great lengths to keep the initiative under wraps. Perhaps Spotify understood the stakes—that when it removed real classical, jazz, and ambient artists from popular playlists and replaced them with low-budget stock muzak, it was steamrolling real music cultures, actual traditions within which artists were trying to make a living. Or perhaps the company was aware that this project to cheapen music contradicted so many of the ideals upon which its brand had been built. Spotify had long marketed itself as the ultimate platform for discovery—and who was going to get excited about “discovering” a bunch of stock music?
Artists had been sold the idea that streaming was the ultimate meritocracy—that the best would rise to the top because users voted by listening. But the PFC program undermined all this. PFC was not the only way in which Spotify deliberately and covertly manipulated programming to favor content that improved its margins, but it was the most immediately galling. Nor was the problem simply a matter of “authenticity” in music. It was a matter of survival for actual artists, of musicians having the ability to earn a living on one of the largest platforms for music. PFC was irrefutable proof that Spotify rigged its system against musicians who knew their worth. In 2023, on a summer afternoon in Brooklyn, I met up with a jazz musician in a park. We talked about the recent shows we had seen, our favorite and least favorite venues, the respective pockets of the New York music scene we moved through. Suspected H5 Bird Flu Detected in Los Angeles County Cats That Consumed Recalled Raw Milk The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health is investigating two possible cases of H5 bird flu in cats that consumed recalled raw milk from Raw Farm, LLC. The infected indoor cats consumed raw milk linked to a recall of raw milk and cream products prior to the onset of symptoms, which included lack of appetite, fever and neurologic signs. The infected cats died after severe worsening of their illness, and subsequently tested positive for Influenza A, a rare result in cats. Public Health is considering these suspected H5 bird flu cases and is obtaining confirmatory testing. The nationwide H5 bird flu outbreak has seen other cats infected with the virus after consuming infected raw milk. People who had direct contact with the cats are monitoring for symptoms and have been offered antiviral prophylaxis. There have been no human cases of bird flu associated with exposure to these cats yet identified. The investigation is ongoing. Although human cases of bird flu are rare and the risk to residents remains low, this detection of H5 bird flu in cats who consumed raw milk underscores the importance of being proactive about preventing ongoing transmission of the virus.

Thanks for this insight! Given your background, I'm curious what you think about the continued existence of native Linux ports like this. From a studio's financial perspective, is the time and resource investment justified for the relatively small Linux audience?

At this point, why WOULDN'T they just rely on Proton compatibility testing? (I'm not complaining about this; merely trying to see all angles)

I think we (Valve) have tried to remain neutral in this and let developers decide.

We're big tech nerds, so we're happy to see that there's a healthy proportion of native releases coming out.

Some Linux gaming news outfits have a regular update of new native releases coming out - that's free exposure for indie studios.

Shipping a native port will also help you improve stability and performance. This is especially true if you are building your own engine.
