Anytime I do some subscription marketing, I feel like I should apologize. Thing is, if we don't market, we don't survive. I'd like to keep doing this job, even with all the "AI" nonsense we deal with. So...

It's a good time to remember the long-forgotten programs like ICQ and QIP, where the only thing left from the good old ICQ is the "o-ou" sound. They already had their own emojis and icons, and in the latest versions even their own qip.ru account. But I agree, it was a good thing! It made ICQ more comfortable and interesting. Just a plugin like the one that fetched the current song from Winamp and put the title in ICQ status was worth a lot!

It was amazing that ICQ had an open protocol that allowed you to write your own clients. I remember a rebellious one under Mandriva Linux that I built from source code. It took an enormous amount of energy. Especially later with the encodings. But what joy it was when everything started working stably!

In the picture is my honeymoon with Linux. I started making these kinds of screenshots before it became mainstream 😬

ah yes ICQ, so many times over the years when a new feature on the other socials arrived, I've said ICQ had/have that already. ICQ and IRC where the only two things that stood up to the online chaos one September, all other MSM fell over and we in the office only had what people told us that they saw on telly happening in NY via #ICQ and #IRC

Actions have consequences — eventually:

With only 24 hours of uptime (a little less, actually), media storage is already growing rapidly.

Self-hosting is already making new appreciate those who run large instances *so* much more. I can see myself having to scale up within a month or less just to cover this experiment.

Due to the diversity of viewpoints and how easily they spread, the following has happened.

Firstly, personal judgment has gained an enormously inflated significance. You present facts, but the person responds by saying they don't believe it and gives their own answer back. And vice versa. When someone presents facts, one must either scrutinize them carefully or give up and say "I don't believe it."

Secondly, a situation has been created where a concept can have a dozen definitions, often contradictory or completely different from each other.

As a result, conversations between people start with careful probing to see if you and the person you're talking to are speaking the same language.

It's like the story of the Tower of Babel.

1/3 If I Must Die: poetry and prose - a MUST read.

"You don't want to hug them, so they don't feel this could be the last one, and you do want to hug them so at least there is a hug out there.

And you want, you know, to pat on their heads. It's very difficult being a father here."

😰The last two chapters are transcribed from Refaat Alareer's voice notes posthumously. It's devastating. He talks about kindness despite the inhumanity, helping his students even as his home is bombed, & kindness begetting kindness. They killed him. US indifference & money and Israel's barbarity. We killed him.

Be kind, always. It costs absolutely nothing and makes the world a better place.

I guess all I'm saying is that the movie hits different when you're identifying most strongly with Dr. Dillamond.

Yeah as a trans public school teacher the Dr. Dillamond arc had me sobbing in my seat. The part where they came to take him away and the primary response was vaguely upset "this sucks but what can you do?" hit particularly hard. They will disappear us and few will object.

A map of Europe showing the percentage of the 25-64 age group that cannot speak a foreign language, color-coded by percentage. The legend indicates percentages ranging from 0-15%, 15-25%, 25-35%, 35-55%, and over 55%. The United Kingdom is highlighted as the highest (65.4%) and Sweden as the lowest (3.4%). Specific percentages are shown for each country. The source is cited as Eurostat, 2016.

> How does the International #Space Station orbit #Earth without burning up? An aerospace engineering scholar explains: theconversation.com/how-does-t… #astronomy #ISS

Yet it WILL burn up, if NASA and Space-X have anything to say about the matter. Space-X has already been contracted to build the USDV deorbit vehicle, and Axiom has pushed forward by two years its plan to attach its first commercial module to the ISS: that's 2028. Three short years from now. The ISS doesn't even have five more years of existence.

NASA's criteria for discarding the ISS and letting it "burn up", as you put it, are ridiculously simple: the presence in orbit of both a USDV and a commercial space station (Axiom).

Once those exist, the ISS is toast, to be replaced by a PRIVATE FOR-PROFIT commercial entity. Near-Earth will be fully privatized, another step backward from Roddenberry's unrealized dream for humanity.

David Walker was an outspoken critic of slavery and racial oppression. Writing during the early 19th century, “Walker’s Appeal to the Colored Citizens of the World” called for an urgent reckoning with the moral and spiritual consequences of slavery. Grounded in biblical principles, Walker urged Black Americans to see themselves as active agents in their own liberation while he castigated White Christians for failing to confront their complicity in systemic sin. #history 1/4
