A 7-Eleven assistant manager in Bangkok has gone viral on TikTok for serving customers in seven languages: English, Chinese, Japanese, Malay, Indonesian, German and Burmese. Teerawat "Tony" Wanichkam, 48, works at the branch at BITEC Bang Na. He grew up in Ayutthaya around foreign visitors, holds a degree in communications and master's degrees in languages and tourism, and once worked in Malaysia, Singapore and Indonesia. He took the store job during Covid when tourism stopped, and on one of his first days ten tour buses of Chinese visitors walked in. He says he sees himself as a goodwill ambassador, so visitors leave with a good feeling about Thailand.

There have been multiple surveys within the last days that did check, if #Mastodon or the #Fediverse is dominated by #German speaking people.

As it seems, this is not the case. The mentioned survey here is one of the more German-dominated results.

However, I'm glad that it's not a German-focused platform as it seems. 👍️

I read some post about how Mastodon consists primarily of German-speaking creatures talking in English. I'm gonna do a poll, need to test that. Boosts highy appreciated!

So, do you speak German?

I would say that multilingualism became less of a thing in Singapore when we decided to min-max everything including subjects that we study. By my generation we were made to feel that there was no point doing or learning anything unless you could get an A in it, whether it’s Malay or Hokkien or music.

Truly a lost generation

Perfectly normal Swedish names translated to English:

Bear Leafbranch
Wulf Flowertwig
Stone Mapleroot

No, not etymologies that take some knowledge to understand. Plain as day meanings. And you can add Thor- as a prefix to all three first names and it'll look completely normal that way too.

People of #Mastodon, please educate me.

I'm probably doing something wrong, as I'm a pretty casual user - I come from the hashtag era where following a #hashtag was the way to get content onto your feed.

Unfortunately, this results in a bunch of posts appearing in #languages I cannot read, and while I love the international aspect of this, sifting through my #timeline has gotten old.

Other than unfollowing hashtags or blocking accounts, is there another way to prune my home feed?

🧵 1/3 I learnt it quite lately: You can enable* automatic #translation for your followers, which is very useful if you write in different #languages.

✅ Set the #language button* to the language you are using to write your post.
➡️ Now, all people who set their Mastodon account to a *different* language, get a #translate button. Mastodon uses Deepl.
❌ If you don't choose the correct language (let's say you write German but let the button on English), your readers won't get the translation link.

GNOME 51 offers support for 37 languages with at least 90% translated strings, making our desktop accessible to everyone, not just English speakers.

Thanks to our translators, who made this happen!

As a person whose native and first language(Teochew) has six or eight tones (depending on how you count them!), I remember being extremely confused when people would hear clearly ‘different (to me)’ words and think they were the same

Anyway, this is a good video about why many languages have tones

how do experienced language learners out there read books in their target language?

I'm reading "Le otto montagne". Understand what's going on, missing many nuances I'm sure, along with new vocab I just skim over.

And yet if I go back and try to make a note of and actively learn some of that vocab, it slows me down so much I lose interest.

What's the best reading strategy to make it both interesting but also "active"?
