At our feet, raggedy flat wet green grass and stems leading a few metres ahead to a sheer drop over this clifftop. Ahead, below us, metal-grey calm sea and rocky promontories curling around this bay in Godrevy, Cornwall. It is an overcast day, the sky dull blue. Bordering the bottom of the scene, an old wooden railing. On it, two small, worn warning signs. On the left: a bright yellow triangle with black illustration of a person falling to their death over the cliff. It says ‘Unstable cliff. Keep away from the edge.’ Right beside it on the right, a dark blue sign with white line drawings etched into it: A seal, comfily tucked in to itself, sleeping, with the profile of a human face beside it, the person’s fingers to their lips, telling us to be quiet and not disturb the seals. You can’t see it in the photo, but lots of seals are both trundling around and sleeping on the isolated beach below the cliffs. The seal in the sign seems to be smiling knowingly. I like to think the two signs are connected, warning humans that if you don’t stay quiet and you do wake a seal, you will be pushed off the cliff.
