This is looking good, The Weather Network is giving us between 6-13 cm of snow (2.4-5.1") of #snow tomorrow!

We got nearly 2 inches (roughly 5 cm) yesterday, with chance of a bit more on Tuesday morning. But then the temps will rise and it will melt. :(

how cold did it end up getting? Your dog probably doesn't need a jacket...though the poop bag holder is nice I guess.

'Israel' prepares for new attack in Yemen, plans to involve additional countries

The Israeli Broadcasting Authority (IBA) reported that security officials stated "Israel" is preparing for another attack in Yemen, this time planning to involve additional countries in the operation.

The agency further noted, citing a source within the occupation, that a message has been sent to the US indicating that Tel Aviv anticipates an increase in attacks against the Houthis.

... Tel Aviv anticipates an increase in attacks against the Houthis.

tel aviv is not sure that tel aviv will step up attacks? could this possibly be stated any more passively?

What's the deal with quotes around Israel im headlines? I see that here all the time
in reply to PotatoesFall

Lebanon does not recognize Israel as a country and Almaydeen is a Lebanese newspaper.
in reply to PotatoesFall

It's a childish way these Arab publications try to show support by trying to outdo eachother when referring to Israel. Putting it in quotes, calling it "the zionist entity", "the occupying force", ...

What they really want to call them is The Evil Jewzies but at least they realized that doesn't really serve their cause. But we get this prepuberal gunk instead

APOD from 2024-12-22

The Local Fluff

About 10% of the Milky Way's visible matter is patchy interstellar medium (ISM), mostly hydrogen gas. The IBEX satellite maps the local ISM, revealing our Sun moving through a cloud that may be exited in 10,000 years. The flow direction of interstellar particles is changing, with much about the ISM still unknown.

So if anyone needs a window opening tool which can be used from a #wheelchair, and is 3D printable and only needs a broom stick, I tested that for you.

Took quite a while to print all parts and it needs an excessive amount of support, but even with just PLA it works fine. Enough. For now.

I would say so, yes :-) When I can do it sitting, then not-so-tall humans should be able to do it standing.

If you haven't checked out mastodon.academy yet, now is a good time.
in reply to Seth is Pissed

@seth It’s a mimic of Google Scholar, but it counts toots and boosts instead of academic publications and citations.

Google Scholar is a search engine for academic publications. But academics also use it as a d*ck-measuring tool because you can have a profile on it that counts your publications and citations. I hate that the only way to get citation alerts (a valid use of the tool: knowing what articles cite my work is a good way to learn about new research relevant to mine) is to get a public profile. I don’t willingly participate in this popularity contest, I have a profile only because the alerts are sometimes valuable. If there was a setting to hide the profile, or even not make any profile but only get citation alerts, I would use it.

in reply to Guillaume Gaullier

@seth Citation analytics tools like Google Scholar notoriously ruin whatever they measure because of Goodhart’s Law: en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Goodha…

Also, the number of publications and citations primarily correlates with how many years a researcher has been active. So this mostly just measures our ages, while also screwing up the incentives of doing research by making part of it a popularity contest.

@OpenSCAD OpenSCAD is software for creating solid 3D CAD models. OpenSCAD is not an interactive modeller. Instead it is something like a 3D-compiler that reads in a script file that describes the object and renders the 3D model from this script file.

And can't talk about #FOSS #CAD apps without mentioning #SolveSpace, a simple but powerful 2D and 3D CAD tool where *everything* is based on constraints, even extrusions and revolutions. It is much quicker to get started with than #FreeCAD and you can get quite far with it.

I shot a set of core concept videos on parts of Aristotle's Poetics for an Intro to Humanities class a while back. I've wanted to finish up the set & cover the entire work. Here's the first new video on that text, this one about humans as mimetic animals

Folks are going to get disillusioned with Trump 2.0 very quickly — and it’s our job to use that disillusionment to break up the fragile GOP coalition and rebuild ours: indivisible.org/guide
