New Zealand's richest man makes the largest single donation this cycle, to National.

This is the death of democracy, outright corruption and is one way our political system gives outsized influence to the super-rich, to the detriment of everyone else.

Donations to political parties should be outright BANNED . Only small membership fees should be allowed (e.g. maximum $100 per person per annum). Such fees are fundamentally democratic, because significant money can only be raised with significant population support.

Then - tax the rich and fund political parties from the state budget. The rich still get to contribute to the political process, just can't do the choosing for all the rest of us.

Unfortunately the response of Labour and other parties is "No Fair - rich people - donate to us too!!!!".

I'm all for a progressive tax system, and like many I think the rich should contribute more to the exchequer.... but its worth noting that currently around one third of income tax & capital gains tax is paid by the top 1%.

It is most of the upper half of the income distribution that has benefitted from a decade or more of tax & benefits changes... and so fairness should start with higher taxes on those above median wages (which may prove politically more difficult?)

Joel Suss (FT( has an interesting, simple proposal for tax:

End most (all?) VAT exemptions, but (the important bit) provide real time rebates below a certain level (he suggests round 60% of median income - £20k) so the poor pay no VAT at all.

This would make the collection of VAT easier, but (the crucial bit) would need a workable system for immediate rebates (and then there would be the step-up problem when you passed the threshold wage).

But interesting idea nonetheless!

If Andy Burnham is looking for ways to fund the cost of living crisis (Andy Burnham urges cabinet to examine ‘all possible ways’ to tackle cost of living crisis, 21 July), why doesn’t he just do the obvious and increase the top rate of income tax which now sits at 45%? During the second world war the top rate was 99.25%; during the Wilson government of the 1960s it was 90%; and it was 83% when Margaret Thatcher became prime minister. Back then high earners mostly lived in the UK, and it was only from the 1980s that high earners such as Rod Stewart and later Phil Collins started bleating about high taxes. The reduction of the top rate of income tax has not resulted in better compliance, as avoidance and evasion are rife, nor has it boosted enterprise. It has, however, produced a more divided and less fair society that has more millionaires and an alarming number of people struggling with the cost of living. Sadly, and I know it’s early days for Burnham, tinkering with small reductions in electricity bills and fixing bus fares won’t have the required effect. Raising income tax for wealthier people (not just the super rich) will both ensure a fairer, more cohesive society and increase the funding available for genuinely radical change.
