Death Of A Forum: How The UK’s Online Safety Act Is Killing Communities - techdirt.com/2024/12/20/death-… we warned this would happen, but #ofcom screwed it up anyway #osa
in reply to Glyn Moody

they want it to happen, their intent is to ensure only big corporations with legal compliance departments may host. To shut down any independent internet.

The main entrance to the Auschwitz I camp with the 'Arbeit macht frei’ gate (work makes one free).

This was a cynical welcome at the Auschwitz I camp. SS guards often told prisoners of #Auschwitz that the only way out from the camp was through the chimney of the crematorium.

Always nice to wake up the day after releasing a new version and not find any new notifications waiting for me. But I still feel a little dread each morning when I open GitHub for the first time. #OpenSource #Burnout

soooooo many white people in this thread

where is the button for "link boost to start your own diggity-dang thread" because more & more I feel like that should be a much more common pattern overall

it's good in spite of this but that's down to @futurebird's toots

I don't know if that mattered as much as I once thought it did. Although, I'm still hopeful that change will come along.

After seeing how the migration from X to BlueSky has worked I'm more convinced than ever that "big accounts" matter. People want to be able to follow the people they are interested in or enjoy and THAT will move users. Interface isn't that important.

in reply to myrmepropagandist

I've made an effort off and on to get minor "big" accounts to move here but (I feel like) I'm the only person who cares. No one has shown much interest in, for example, trying to get leftist activists who are known moved over here.

I like that I can follow some of the artists and authors I'm interested in here. But, I'm kind of detached from pop culture and I think a lot of people who are happy here are too.

But I don't think it's irrelevant. It matters.

in reply to myrmepropagandist

@woozle
I'm hesitant to even list some of the people who I think could have been usefully recruited since inevitably someone will point out some bad thing one of them did once, or explain why THEY wouldn't follow that person... which is missing the point.

TYT for example (I pick them *because* they are deeply flawed) It's bad that they aren't here. There are 100,000s of people who'd come with them.

TYT is neither left enough, nor pure enough to really be welcome let alone invited.

@woozle
My impression is that people are here for the clubbiness and that people that want movement stuff or Lefty stuff or politics stuff are over on threads or blue sky?
in reply to jhall251

@jhall251 @woozle I'm honestly here for lefty stuff cause organizing on corporate-controlled social media sounds like an Extremely Bad Idea 😅

Organizing here isn't much better either cause it's public and unencrypted, but I'm less scared of posting lefty stuff here

Organizing as in planning would make no sense, but reaching people, educating, and wider actions have to go where the people are. You can't get done in some isolated enclave.

So, if you were like a friend of mine who does a lot of union stuff this place isn't useful since she can't find the people she's looking for. She's on X and BlueSky and slowly phasing out X.

in reply to myrmepropagandist

@woozle that's so contrary to how I personally use social media lol, I don't really care about "big accounts" cause for me the important thing is having personal interactions with people 😅
in reply to hazelnot

@hazelnot @woozle
I don't care either but I do care about a lot of the people who follow big accounts, and the kind of environment that supports a wider conversation.

It's unreasonable to expect people to give up the things they enjoy about social media just to be free from "corporate control" -- but that's the only offer the fedi is making at the moment.

And that's a choice that keeps things "a certain way" it limits who can be comfortable here.
