"Part of the challenge of decentralisation is the language around it ...

In the book, this concept is a network of regional indie record shops that managed themselves in their area and acted as specialists for their local scene but they could also plug into a wider distribution network nationally to stock their shops and cross-pollinate with other areas. It is this idea that we want to transfer into digital terms."

Excited to be teaching the 5th edition of the Tunnel training tomorrow.

In 4 days there be some shiny new sovereign VPNs in the wild, running atop geothermal energy in Iceland, each capable of supporting hundreds of people.

One small step toward re-asserting that the basic right to privacy ought not be left to private enterprises. Rather, it should be in the hands of communities, meeting their needs, and on their terms.

My experience within my IRL circles is that people do not generally care enough directly about these issues to make any changes.

However, they do care about social, political and other issues affecting their world, nation and daily life... so if you wait until they complain about any of these issues and then clearly link their issues to one of our solutions involving #privacy, #decentralisation, #digitalsovereignty, #opensource, #ethicaltech, etc. in a subtle and not-pushy way, you can have a good chance of success.

Using this strategy, I managed to persuade all of my family members to #gnuLinux, and all of my family and most of my extended family + in-laws that I'm in contact with are now on #DeltaChat.

@jon @Vivaldi Btw, would be great to have a light stripped-down version of #Vivaldi without the any of the proprietary UI bits for people who prefer Open Source. You could even make it a paid offering like some other browsers.

We'll be gathering at the @dweb camp in Alte Holle/Berlin from 8-12 July, together with people working on the crossroads of #opensource #decentralisation #cooperative #SSE Social and Solidarity Economy and #commoning

I'm really happy that we decided collectively to do this, when we were together at the @internetarchiveeurope in Amsterdam last February.

We'll be working together shaping the building up of the Democratic Tech Fund Below a list of the workshops and sessions we're part of (directly), while weaving connections with all people and communities working in solidarity towards a decent world, based on shared, democratic tech that works for our communities and not against us.

I'm in Berlin until Sunday :hamster_dance:

If you're into #freeSoftware, #decentralisation, #cooperatives, #socialism, #anarchism, #workersUnion, #rojava or other rad stuff; I want to meet you for a nice discussion over a beer, tea, club mate or beverage of your choice :heart_cyber:

I'll be dropping by the #dwebcamp site, probably on Saturday (but won't enter because it's too expensive), so if you're around Alte Hölle we could also meet there.

About me: I'm a bit under 30 yrs old, I present mostly masculine. I organize for grassroots democratization in all aspects of society; political, social, economic, technological. Free technology enjoyer and contributor.
I believe we need to build international bonds between emancipatory movements, and that our movements need tech under movement control (no big tech).

Worshipping the #deathcult is strangely normal even inside our “alternative” tech spaces.

Look at how we talk about horizontal #openweb projects. The branding itself pulls us back into the same patterns: building identities around products, personalities and platforms instead of the commons and the wider movement.

#Mastodon, #PeerTube and the use of the term #Fediverse become part of this #fashernista cycle - chasing labels and recognition while avoiding or forgetting the deeper social change these tools were meant to support.

At the #OMN we use #openweb as the bigger frame. The projects are important, but they should sit as links within a wider ecosystem, not become the whole story.

The path is not another brand. The path is a living, diverse, decentralised movement for change and challenge.

Time to stop looking down at the floor, get up and build the commons.

Our #mainstreaming problem. If you are wondering why I keep documenting the issues around the #ActivityPub #openweb reboot, this is why.

Next time, maybe we can learn. Maybe we can mediate our “libertarian cats” a bit better and get a less messy path. Because we cannot keep making the same mistakes over and over.

I have been through this mess more than five times over 20 years of working on #openweb use, outreach and community building. This is not theory. It is experience.

Decentralised spaces are messy by nature. That is part of their strength. But if we don’t learn from our failures, the same patterns keep returning. So at the very least:

Can we please fuck up differently this time?

Document the lessons.

Build the memory.

Keep the commons alive.

Mess.

Wrote this 5 years ago, and it still feels relevant.

#OMN is about pushing pragmatic horizontalism as a living practice.

There are millions of people experimenting with these ideas through the #fediverse and the wider #openweb - one of the biggest real-world experiments in decentralised, networked social organisation happening today.

The interesting question is not whether horizontal systems can work. The question is how we learn from them, improve them and build the social tools needed to keep them healthy.

Less control, more participation, build the commons.

I have written a sample letter that you can use to invite organizations to join the #Fediverse.

The letter is shared under a #CC0 license. Feel free to copy, adapt and send it to organizations that still rely on #BigTech.

Thanks to @danie1 for the English translation.

Avec ce type de présentation, on est pas prêt de sortir de la centralisation, des fakes news et des fonds d'inverstissement.

Is the world too dependent on American tech? A Dutch journalist breaks down how much of the internet US companies control, the cloud infrastructure they own, and the digital life they shape.

It raises serious questions about sovereignty, resilience, and long-term freedom online.

One person. One list. Millions protected.

This interview with Peter Lowe explains how a simple, community-driven blocklist became foundational to modern ad blocking. No tracking, no VC money, just consistency and care.

It's a reminder that the internet still works because people quietly maintain it.
