DeepSeek’s rise shows why China’s top AI talent is skipping Silicon Valley.

cross-posted from: ponder.cat/post/1527018

  • DeepSeek has recruited recent graduates and interns from China’s top universities.
  • Facing visa hurdles and high living expenses, more of China’s AI researchers are choosing opportunities at home rather than abroad.
  • U.S. chip restrictions have forced Chinese companies to accelerate innovation.

Peter Dutton is promising to slash the public service. Voters won’t know how many jobs are lost until after the election

Opposition Leader Peter Dutton has doubled down on his commitment to sack thousands of public servants if he’s elected prime minister.

Dutton has again highlighted the “wasteful” 36,000 increase in public service jobs under Labor, which he says has made the Australian Public service “bloated and inefficient”.

While there is considerable political hyperbole and Trumpian allusions in Dutton’s statements, there are areas where legitimate savings could be made by whoever wins the coming election. That includes a second-term Albanese government, which would need to find efficiencies to offset promised wage increases.

Climate change target of 2C is ‘dead’, says renowned climate scientist

Summary

Renowned climate scientist James Hansen warns that limiting global warming to 2°C is no longer possible due to underestimated climate sensitivity and reduced sun-blocking pollution from ships.

His study suggests warming could hit 2°C by 2045, increasing extreme weather and accelerating ice melt. The research challenges IPCC models, arguing for a higher climate sensitivity estimate.

Hansen calls for carbon taxes, nuclear energy, and geoengineering research.

He warns of an Atlantic ocean current collapse within 20-30 years.

Some good news:
- ~~emission rates have plateaued; we are still destroying the planet, but no longer accelerating the rate at which we do it~~
- Solar panels (unsubsidized) are the cheapest method of electricity generation as of 2022
- there is a fundamentally limited amount of fossil fuels, so as long as we don’t turn to Venus 2.0 by 2100 we will deplete most coal and oil and it will be possible for our ancestors to repair the planet over the following centuries.

Yeah I know even this “good news” is bleak, but it’s worth celebrating. There is some hope.

I saw it originally watching . Reviewing, it looks like the chart shown is actually a great example of a terrible graph; it uses 5 year periods then switches to 1 year periods without clear indication, making it look flatter than it would otherwise. If I adjust for this in a photo editor, emissions have barely slowed. I was misled, sorry for passing that on and thanks for questioning it.

Good on you to have integrity.

But yeah, that's what I gather, too, whenever I check. Nothing we do has an impact. I'm hoping the huge renewables push in China over the last few years might finally have an effect, but :(

Reports that the US, working in conjunction with Israel, is going to “blow Iran into smithereens,” are greatly exaggerated - President Trump in a social media post
in reply to Steve Herman

if I was Iran I would be looking to become a nuclear power as quickly as possible, I truly don't agree with nuclear weapons but you only have to look at what happened to Ukraine, they were forced to give up their nuclear weapons on a promise of protecting them from any aggressors, all it has done is allowed Russia to attack them without fear of nuclear retaliation and the world is just sitting back and letting it happen. My advice, get a nuke protect your country because no one else will.

Ukraine Restrictions Off!

US gave Ukraine approval to strike anywhere in Russia with Western weapons!

"The situation with the restrictions on using Western weapons for strikes on Russian territory has indeed changed for the better. Previously, we were completely prohibited from carrying out such strikes. Now, we are operating without restrictions not only in the Kursk region, but across all of Russia."

USA always says no before they say yes to Ukraine. But in the end we always say yes to Ukraine. Once Ukraine has demonstrated an indigenous ability to perform long range strikes using their own technology, it can't be claimed that the USA gave them any capability they didn't already possess. It's political maneuvering by the USA to nullify Putin's propaganda that western weapons are escalatory. A slow and painful process. Legalistic.

🔹 Licencias:
Si incluye software no 100% libre, F-Droid podría no recomendarla.

in reply to Julio Alberto Lascano

OsmAnd~ is built from the FOSS code, but it take a great deal of cleaning and things might not be perfect, given the complexity of the source. Hence we keep new versions as "unstable" for a while just in case. This reminds us, we can mark 4.9.10 as suggested already. For those brave enough, you can always manually update to unstable Versions or check "Allow Beta Updates" from the upper right menu.
