today in #hachyderm infra: it turns out selecting a non-US DNS zone provider isn't that straightforward.

the dualing features right now are: flexibility in geo-based responses vs. DNSSEC.

geo-routing is supported usually in one of two ways:

- anycast points of presence in target regions that are loaded with geo-specific zones (dnsimple)
- some kind of scripting interface (bunny? anyone else?)

the folks that set up pops generally don't have them where we want them -- usually missing south america, africa, india, and asia other than tokyo/sydney.

the folks with the flexible scripting interfaces don't support DNSSEC.

we don't use DNSSEC today, but it seems like a generally good-ish thing -- I'm not 100% convinced, but I'm starting from a default position that we *should* enable it, and i'll want to convince myself the value there isn't there before deciding to not do it. up for thoughts/ideas!

current thoughts:

- dnsimple is just that: very simple, straightforward. they're also our current registrar. supports the pop-style geo routing, but no pops in sa, africa, limited asia pops
- bunnydns seems very neat. the scripting platform for dns responses seems *very* powerful. big downside: no dnssec. i don't know how they'd support dnssec with the dynamic nature of scripting.
- deSEC looks VERY clean, and is powered by #foss ❤️ . pops are a bit better than dnsimple, but still missing SA/africa/india and japan (which we use today). unfortunately, no geo-based responses that I can find. oh and it's also FREE (we'd donate tho)!

leaning toward bunnydns but need to think through consequences of not having dnssec available. likely will write a longer-form post with moar thinking.

Today, in honor of Black History Month, we celebrate the life of Hubert Henry Harrison (April 27, 1883 – December 17, 1927), a West Indian-American writer, speaker, educator, political activist based in Harlem, New York. He was described by union leader A. Philip Randolph as the father of Harlem radicalism and by John G. Jackson as "The Black Socrates." Harrison’s activism encouraged the development of class consciousness among workers, black pride, secular humanism, social progressivism, and free thought. He denounced the Bible as a slave master's book, and said that black Christians needed their heads examined. He refused to exalt a "lily white God " and "Jim Crow Jesus," and criticized Churches for pushing racism, superstition, ignorance and poverty. Religious extremists were known to riot at his lectures. At one of his events, he attacked and chased off an extremist who had attacked him with a crowbar.

In the early 1910s, Harrison became a full-time organizer with the Socialist Party of America. He lectured widely against capitalism, founded the Colored Socialist Club, and campaigned for Eugene V. Debs’s 1912 bid for president of the U.S. However, his politics moved further to the left than the mainstream of the Socialist Party, and he withdrew in 1914. He was also a big supporter of the IWW, speaking at the 1913 Paterson Silk Strike, and supporting the IWW’s advocacy of direct action and sabotage. In 1914, he began working with the anarchist-influenced Modern School movement (started by the martyred educator Francisco Ferrer). During World War I, he founded the Liberty League and the “Voice: A Newspaper for the New Negro,” as radical alternatives to the NAACP. The Liberty League advocated internationalism, class and race consciousness, full racial equality, federal anti-lynching legislation, enforcement of the Fourteenth and Fifteenth Amendments, labor organizing, support for socialist and anti-imperialist causes, and armed self-defense.

In just a few weeks, the Trump administration has unleashed some of the most sweeping assaults on democracy, civil rights, and global stability in modern history. Every move has been calculated to entrench authoritarian control, whether by punishing law enforcement officials who prosecuted insurrectionists, dismantling public health protections, handing over government power to billionaires, criminalizing diversity and thought, or upending global trade agreements. These are not the actions of a democratic leader — they are the hallmarks of a fascist regime.

“So what do we do?” is a question I receive dozens of times per day. The worst thing we can do is give up. Autocrats want capitulation through exhaustion and compliance through fear. Do not give them that fuel.

The way to fight back is through relentless resistance, organization, and action. It is imperative that we remember what justice looks like — because none of this is just — and continue to fight for that justice.
