Accidents at giant Rio Tinto project kill more than a dozen workers, prompting inquiry
Camara was unloading 1.3-tonne-bags of coal ash when the forklift he was operating hit a pillar and toppled over, crushing him.
He was one of six local workers killed between June 2023 and November 2024 in the construction of a port and a 670-kilometre railway leading to the mines in remote rural Guinea, according to internal reports compiled by company officials that documented more than 40 undisclosed accidents, reviewed by Reuters.
Six company sources provided Reuters with the identities of a further six workers who were killed. None of the fatalities have been reported publicly.
Rio Tinto on October 28, 2024 announced the death of another worker at the port site.
The level of worker fatalities on the mine's rail and port infrastructure – which is managed by Rio's Chinese partners, Winning Consortium Simandou (WCS) – is unusually high by Western industry standards, according to a dozen experts interviewed by Reuters, including mining executives and lawyers.

Dutch lawmakers object to EU's multibillion defense proposal
The Netherlands' parliament on Tuesday narrowly voted against a multibillion-euro European Union defense plan presented by Dutch Prime Minister Dick Schoof last week.
The motion was introduced by the right-wing populist JA21 party, also known as the Conservative Liberals.
It was supported by three of the four coalition parties. The motion passed in a 73-71 vote, with the opposition Socialists (SP) also voting in favor.
Though the motion is not legally binding, it raises uncertainty about how the government will proceed.

Comparing User Activity on X and Mastodon.
cross-posted from: programming.dev/post/26798208
The "Fediverse", a federation of decentralized social media servers, has emerged after a decade in which centralized platforms like X (formerly Twitter) have dominated the landscape. The structure of a federation should affect user activity, as a user selects a server to access the Fediverse and posts are distributed along the structure. This paper reports on the differences in user activity between Twitter and Mastodon, a prominent example of decentralized social media. The target of the analysis is Japanese posts because both Twitter and Mastodon are actively used especially in Japan. Our findings include a larger number of replies on Twitter, more consistent user engagement on this http URL, and different topic preferences on each server.

Iran’s nuclear programme in focus in China, Russia and US
China has said it will convene talks with Russia and Iran as the United States increases pressure on Tehran to agree to a new deal on its nuclear programme.
Beijing announced on Wednesday that it would host officials from Russia and Iran to discuss the issue later this week. The meeting will follow a closed-door session of the United Nations Security Council called by Western nations.

‘I feel utter anger’: From Canada to Europe, a movement to boycott US goods is spreading
The renowned German classical violinist Christian Tetzlaff was blunt in explaining why he and his quartet have cancelled a summer tour of the US.
“There seems to be a quietness or denial about what’s going on,” Tetzlaff said, describing his horror at the authoritarian polices of Donald Trump and the response of US elites to the country’s growing democratic crisis.
“I feel utter anger. I cannot go on with this feeling inside. I cannot just go and play a tour of beautiful concerts.”
Tetzlaff is not alone in acting on his disquiet. A growing international move to boycott the US is spreading from Scandinavia to Canada to the UK and beyond as consumers turn against US goods.

Posts are different between instances
Screenshot of posts on sh.itjust.works
Screenshot of posts on lemmy.world
I've noticed that there is quite a difference between the posts that are displaying on sh.itjust.works vs lemmy.world. It was like this last night and I woke up this morning and its still the same. I read around and lots of people a couple years back solved this with selecting undetermined and english in their language settings but mine is already set up like that. Both are sorting the same was using "Active." I don't have anything blocked as far as I know. I can't find any recent discussions about this so I was wondering if this is an issue on my end or something else?
Assuming the same communities are being followed and no users are blocked and all else is equal, one possible explanation is that lemmy.world is using Lemmy 0.19.3, and sh.itjust.works is on Lemmy 0.19.5. Something might have changed in how posts are sorted between the two versions.
One might expect these two instances to be pretty similar, as they both have a bunch of users and are pretty much catch-all. But in general, different instances of Lemmy will display different content by design - the users decide the direction of the instance by following communities they are interested in.

Trump is systematically destroying ties with all of US's allies going back 70-80 years. There is no justification, not even "fentanyl" and "immigration" apply to most of the allies we're picking fights with. The only country safe from criticism is Russia.
To me there is no doubt what's happening, but it's incredibly discouraging that there doesn't seem to be a thing we can effectively do about it. American voters were offered a cyanide pill, told it was candy by a known conman and liar, and ate it despite us all shouting, "It's cyanide, don't be an idiot!"

I'm surrounded by conservative voters where I live and most of them say "I haven't heard about that" whenever I mention a new outrage that's in the news that I see. I think it's their way of saying "I don't believe you".
When I talked to a couple of them about the zelensky oval office fiasco one response was "well I heard that zelensky called Vance a bitch in the meeting". I pointed out that he was lied to and that the whole thing was recorded and that never happened, but I would bet money that they still believe that lie over me. Another response was the Russian propaganda that zelensky is a dictator. There is no reasoning with them. They don't care about what reality is. They only believe in what makes them feel good and feeds their pride and ego. I've tried having rational discussions, but it always ends with them saying "I can't articulate why you're wrong, but I disagree with you". And I'm not talking about revolution or something similar. There are no safety measures in the US for this situation or if there are, they are failing.
Shouldn't it be the job of the NSA or another fancy agency to prevent him to act against the interests of the nation?

This is all to say: Russia and America aligning is of no immediate concern to most countries that don't have close ties to Western Europe; it's all about navigating conflicts between global powers and getting the best deal possible for oneself and one's country.
A notable exception is probably Iran, which will probably be distanced by Russia if the US-Russia alignment fully progresses. However, this is because Iran is trying to attain regional dominance, so rather than getting the best deal they know the deal they want and they're trying to get it.

The British government at the time (not just Neville himself) felt that Germany's modern air force was powerful enough to destroy them on its own and that they couldn't challenge Hitler until they had enough modern fighters (Hurricanes and Spitfires) to defend themselves. In additional fact, the only reason Britain had these fighters in the pipeline at all was because Chamberlain had resisted the entreaties of Britain's own "bomber mafia", a group of RAF officers and industrialists who wanted Britain to build their own massive bomber fleet for offensive action in lieu of defensive fighters.
In retrospect, the impact of the bomber was vastly overestimated in the 1930s, as evidenced by the fact that Germany ended up suffering a much more massive assault at the hands of British and American bomber fleets later in the war while continuing to increase military production all the while.
