dear arxiv: what an absolutely terrible idea.

arXiv is in the process of migrating "all" its services off Cornell University servers to Google Cloud. I'm concerned about what implications this could have for its long term independence and fitness for mission info.arxiv.org/hiring/index.ht…

  • create new torrent each month with that month's papers
  • put them in an rss feed at arxiv.org/torrents.rss

DONE! YOU ARE DONE THEN! THERE ARE NO MORE STEPS!

Going around to all the print shops in town like "I need to fit this 600 page dissertation, about how the car industry actively and deliberately dismantled public transit from the very outset, onto a bumper sticker, and my bumper is this 3 inch wide bicycle fender."

A journey through Romania’s rural traditions for a unique Easter experience byteseu.com/943537/ #Romania

As a child, I watched G-rated, family-friendly movies where Nazis were bad actually and people who refused to cooperate with them were heroes.

I think the grownups of that time were trying to teach the kids something.

From the film I also learned that fleeing to another country was a heroic option to avoid having to cooperate with fascists, especially if you eloped with your kids' hot young nanny in the process.

Family musicals were different then I guess?

in reply to My camera shoots fascists

Sound of Music is 60 years old this year. In 1965, WWII was only 20 years in the past.

I saw it later, as a kid, when Naziism was in the living memory of many millions of people. I had a childhood friend whose dad had been a child soldier in the last days of the Third Reich, firing anti aircraft guns for Hitler, before immigrating to the U.S.

Is that really it? That once something like this dies from living memory the horrors disappear? That there is no human institutional memory? Do we really have to relive a certain set of horrors every few generations?

I don't know why my mind drifted off to #SoundOfMusic this afternoon while applying caulk to the new shower, but here we are.

Bulgarians’ Incomes Rise Sharply, But Spending Follows Close Behind – Novinite.com byteseu.com/943535/ #Bulgaria

US shale gas extraction comes with significant methane emissions. Methane is a strong greenhouse gas, and its concentration in the atmosphere is rising. It's time to properly account for and address those 'upstream' emissions.

#China’s #TMSRLF1 Molten Salt #Thorium Reactor Begins Live Refueling Operations
Original research comes from #US scientists in 1960s. While there were tests in MSRE reactor, no follow-up study were funded. The concept languished until recently, with Terrestrial Energy’s Integral MSR and construction on China’s 2 MW TMSR-LF1 experimental reactor commencing in 2018 before first criticality in 2023. Since #TMSR doesn’t need cooling water, it is perfect for use in arid areas.

🚨 NEW: Crowdsourced database of #NSF grant terminations. 🚨

We've been able to collect info on 1̶1̶0̶ 431 (!) cancelled grants. Thanks to all who reported.

UPDATE: We think this is all of Friday's terminations.

airtable.com/appGKlSVeXniQZkFC…

These terminations target misinformation research, AI literacy and safety, and programs to broaden participation in science and education. They're an attack on the very idea of an educated and informed citizenry, because it's a threat to authoritarian power.
