It was very sad to watch CNN, right after their showing of the Edward R. Murrow "Good Night Good Luck".
CNN had a bunch of "journalists" and the discussion divided among the "we just report facts without opinion" and "we are journalists who must use our expertise to weigh credibility, describe context and effects of those facts, even if that displays our opinion". The NYT guy was, sadly, the strongest "just the facts" "fair and balanced" side.
To me journalists must act as experts and interpreters because most of us do not have the abilities or knowledge to do that ourselves, particularly on complex or technical (or medical or economic) matters.
