The GO Transit electrification project was one of the most promising projects in Toronto with the potential to transform the GTA for the better.
This was supposed to be the electrification of the GO Transit network with 15-minute (or less) all-day trains in each direction. Now that goal seems basically impossible.

Cosmic rays are high-energy particles moving at close to the speed of light. They can strike our bodies with so much damage that they shatter DNA, especially when we're away from the Earth's protective magnetosphere. But their source has always been a mystery. Now, astronomers think they might have located where they're coming from: pulsar wind nebulae. These are expanding bubbles around neutron stars that have been energized with radiation from the dead star.

The image features a cartoon-style drawing of a tiger-like creature standing on a rocky mound. The creature has an orange body with black stripes, a white belly, and a pink nose. Its eyes are closed, and it has a wide-open mouth with large, prominent fangs. The creature's arms are raised, with one hand raised higher than the other, and its claws are black and sharp. The creature's tail is short and bushy, with a white tip. The background is plain white, emphasizing the creature. The artist's signature is visible in the bottom left corner.

Commuter rail fucking sucks! We shouldn't be building trains that only run into the city in the morning and back out to suburbia in the afternoon!
We shouldn't be building trains for car drivers, we should be building transit for all people so that they don't even need cars in the first place! ๐คฆโโ๏ธ

It looks like nothing is going to substantially change in Toronto, and the end of this video was wishful thinking.
People get so pissed off at me when I'm negative about the future of Canadian cities, but between this and tearing out bike lanes, they're not providing me with much evidence to the contrary.

It's really depressing. ๐

Pretty annoying to hear I still won't be able to make those kind of trips in the near future, thought it was about time when I heard news of the initial proposal.

Unknown parent • • •@sharp that's a stupid take.
DB regional trains are within 6 minutes of on-time over 90% of the time. The GO Transit project was a regional train project.
It's long-distance trains that have problems in Germany, and the vast majority of THOSE issues are caused by the massive infrastructure project that's currently underway.
The reason that project has to be so big and so disruptive is because of multiple decades of chronic underfunding of rail infrastructure in favour of car infrastructure.
dario
in reply to Not Just Bikes ๐ณ๐ฑ • • •@sharp as a german myself, the constant hypernegativity towards DB really annoys me. There is lots of stuff to rightfully criticize, and while the frustration of most passengers is totally understandable, constantly repeating that everything sucks 100% of the time is neither helpful nor true.
The vast majority of the current problems are caused by decades of bad political decisions, so yelling about DB being terrible is missing the point anyway, and even playing into the hands of those responsible by deflecting the blame away from them and the status quo.
Also, while I have lots of gripes about how they're running the daily operations, they're doing an amazing job overall considering the external constraints and frankly non stellar top management.
Not Just Bikes ๐ณ๐ฑ
Unknown parent • • •@mia Those systems would typically be called "regional rail."
Commuter rail is only for commuting: trains that come into the city from the suburbs in the morning, and go out in the afternoon. There's often no service or very very limited service in the other direction.
It's a mind-bogglingly dumb way to run a railway, but it's pretty common in the US and Canada.
