In February, the EU institutions agreed to reserve 31 animal-species and meat-cut terms exclusively for products of animal origin, while deliberately leaving format names like 'burger', 'sausage' and 'nuggets' available for #plant-based producers.
That compromise entered into force on 19 August, but it may already be overturned. MEPs just tabled amendments to the full CMO revision to restrict those terms anyway, disregarding an agreement they had only just reached and putting the credibility of the European Parliament at risk.
The new amendments go further than anything previously discussed, reaching terms never before on the table like "meatballs" and "rabbit". One would add a clause allowing each Member State to impose its own national restrictions on top, which means 27 rulebooks for the same product inside the single market.
