The image features a close-up of a cat's face, with the cat looking upwards. The cat has a mix of brown and white fur, with distinct stripes and a white muzzle. Its eyes are open and focused, with a warm, amber color. The cat's whiskers are long and white, extending outward from its face. The lighting in the image is bright, highlighting the cat's features and creating a contrast between the illuminated areas and the darker background. The background is slightly blurred, with hints of a dark-colored surface and a floral-patterned object, possibly a cushion or blanket, adding a touch of color to the scene.

A yellow ceramic mug is filled with dark brown tea, with a tea bag partially submerged in the liquid. The tea bag is made of a light brown, semi-transparent material, with a darker brown tea leaf visible inside. The mug is placed on a white surface, possibly a table or countertop, with a slight reflection visible on the mug's surface. The handle of the mug is on the right side, and the tea bag is positioned on the left side of the mug, with the string tied at the top. The background is plain and white, providing a simple and clean setting for the mug and tea.

You know what I'd like? A cable labeling standard that requires the transmission and power protocols to be on the body of the connector or cable length.

So I dont have to spend 2 days trying to figure out that my PS5 wont send 4k to my tv via receiver because the HDMI isnt 2.0

IT IS NOT REASONABLE TO HAVE A SPEC SHEET AVAILABLE FOR A CABLE. PUT THAT INFO ON THE GODDAMN CABLE.

USB 3.x has entered the chat. There are labelling standards for the ports but, as far as I can tell, not for the cables. How many of the pins are actually connected and how? How much power can it handle? What speed can it handle? Who knows, try them all or purchase a specialised piece of test equipment that's likely to be several thousand dollars, at least.

@StarkRG From what I've seen in computer labs and data centers, I have to wonder how many perfectly good cables get thrown out because no one knows the specs on the cables that were installed five years ago or even just sitting in a bin.
in reply to FoolishOwl

@foolishowl There are inexpensive continuity testers that can tell you what pins are connected, and there are slightly more expensive testers that can give you an idea of how much power they can reasonably conduct, but figuring out what speed they can reliably transmit is a complex problem that even the most well-equipped electronics lab would struggle with. It needs to be written on the cable or some other method of identification.

@StarkRG
And the labeling “standards” for the ports suck. How is anyone going to read these when they are a 1/4” long and 1/8” high stamped in plastic on the back of a computer?

Many professed concerns from the right about Israel or antisemitism are expressions of American identity politics and nativism
-- more than they are statements of genuine concern for the safety and well-being of minorities.

Bright Visitor in the Canopy

This bird dropped in briefly this morning while Charlie and I were outside, sipping coffee and watching the feeder drama unfold. I believe it’s a juvenile Baltimore Oriole (Icterus galbula), though it could also be an Orchard Oriole (Icterus spurius). Honestly, I’m hoping for the latter—I don’t have a photo of one yet. But Merlin lists Baltimore as its first choice and Orchard as a close second. Copilot agrees: the evidence leans toward Baltimore.

Celebrating anything from the old testament rather than the gospels is not Christianity. The 10 commandments were not from the Christian New Testament but from the Jewish Old Testament.
